Verve Records was originally founded in 1956 by one of the most important non-musicians in American jazz, Norman Granz, concert promoter, industry visionary and manager of such important artist as Oscar Peterson or Ella Fitzgerald. In 1960 Granz sold Verve to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which in turn sold its record labels to Polydor in 1972. PolyGram eventually merged with the Universal Music Group making the Verve Music Group the hub for Universal's vast catalogue of jazz recordings.
