Tempa Tempa
In operation since the year 2000, London's Tempa label is known to many as the defining label of the dubstep style. While this is mostly due to Skream's 'Midnight Request Line' becoming dubstep's first major crossover hit in 2005, further genre-defining productions from artists like Benga, Kode 9, Coki or D1 have contributed their share to establishing Tempa as the leader of the pack.

After his recent crossover attempts into mainstream acceptance, Skream returns to Tempa for the sixth entry to 'Skreamism', the series of releases that solidified his name as an innovator in the UK underground. Over 6 weighty cuts, it is evident that there's no loss of edge to Skream's trademark funk and swagger.

Classic dubstep by Stuart 'SP:MC' Procter on the genre-defining Tempa label: 'Hunted' builds on a sparse and spacious beats before dropping slightly unsettling basslines and samples, 'Oh My Gosh' heads further into slo-mo territory with traces of dub and bass wobbles. Old-school with class.

Widely credited for being instrumental in the development of UK garage and later dubstep, Horsepower Productions' legacy is still going strong after well over 10 years of releases. The pioneering UK outfit appeared most notably on Tempa, who unearths 4-tracks of their uncompromising sound for 'The Lost Tapes'.

Digital Mystikz's Coki takes the bass wobble to the midrange with two killer cuts for Tempa. 'Boomba' brings the spinet out of storage while dropping ton-heavy beats on us, and 'Carbon Aliens' is a phased-out acid-stepper, sparsely instrumented, yet decidedly deadly. Fine work, once again.

Key pioneers of dubstep, London group Horsepower Productions fronted by Benny Ill return to Tempa with their first album in six years. Finely sculpted bass textures and mystery-laden samples, deep, brooding and atmospheric, setting the benchmark for dubstep high again indeed. Outstanding.

Since his genre-defining album, 'Diary Of An Afro Warrior', Benga has been in relative seclusion production-wise. With 'Phaze One', Benga fires his response to the ever-shifting landscape of UK Bass music. Check the video for the B-more scorcher, 'Baltimore Clap'!
