Sahko Recordings Sahko Recordings
Named after the Finnish word for electricity, Sähko is without a doubt one of the most significant labels of the 1990s, having pioneered the sound of minimalistic reduction with ground-breaking acts like Ø, Pan(a)sonic, and Mike Ink. Founded by Tommi Grönlund with the help of Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen, the label has managed to put forth a unique vision of electronic music, based on sparse rhythmic repetition and analogue sine waves. This has however not stopped Sähko from occasional excursions into different fields with jazz releases by Jimi Tenor, electro experiments by Freestyle Man, or acoustic recordings by nsi..

Rescued from the vaults, this recording of 1974 collaboration between Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Ron West of The Tea Set was inspired by a talk given by Brian Eno. An incredible 30-minutes with freaky oscillator flexes reverberating between haunting noise and eerie calm. Still as compelling almost 40 years later.

Four essential Mika Vainio cuts from 1998 see their long overdue digital release. This is classic Pan_sonic-style material, with glistening sine wave arpeggios over radically reduced techno and electro-inspired beats. Completely hypnotic and devastating on proper sound systems.

A reissue of a long-deleted 12" on PUU, Sähko brings us 'En Velo' of Papa Blue, the obscure side project of Finish dance producer Jaakko Salovaara. Lovely loopy electronica jazz, featuring the classic 'Luna En La Pampa', the EP's much sought after collaboration track with Maurice Fulton.

U-bahn (Track 07 on this Album) was reviewed:
Sandwell District: "Mika Vainio under his, 'Ohm', pseudonym. 'Oleva' is an album of music for cities. I love the John Carpenter-esque, 'city under siege' vibe of the 'U-Bahn' and 'S-Bahn' tracks. I also like how it's a bit of a departure for Mika Vainio. It's more stringy and soundtrackish than a lot of his other material. And it has a cover version of Pink Floyd's, 'Let The Controls To The Heart Of The Sun'. Class."
