Raster-Noton Raster-Noton
Having emerged from the fusion of the Rastermusic and Noton labels in 1999, Raster-Noton has since established itself as the single most influential German platform for experimental electronic music. Run by Noton's Carsten Nicolai (a.k.a. Alva Noto) and Olaf Bender (a.k.a. Byetone, co-founder of Rastermusic alongside Frank Bretschneider), Raster-Noton's field of activity expands far beyond that of a traditional record label, encompassing work in design, media art and sonic research. The label's catalogue of over 70 releases includes works of renowned artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, Ivan Pavlov a.k.a. COH, Ryuichi Sakamoto or Carl Michael von Hausswolff.

Known as part of To Rococo Rot, Berlin's Robert Lippok solo work is much sparser, indeed 10 years since his wonderful 'Open Close Open' release on Raster Noton. Now this full album sees edgy pulsing structures and angular rhythmical forms unite with his beautifully emotive electronic touch. Highly recommended.

Byetone, Olaf Bender's solo project, follows up 2008's rather epic 'Death Of A Typographer'. Shirking somewhat those cleaner micro-sliced edges, 'SyMeta' delves into darker industrial depths from murky electro motifs of 'T-E-L-E-G-R-A-M-M' to gritty post-punk leanings of 'Black Peace'. Premium electronic subversions.

Anne-James Chaton creates his tracks from cut-up news announcements, endlessly looping small text fragments until they develop an oddly hypnotic charm. Previously featured on Alva Noto's 'Unitxt' this a full album of his recordings. Brilliant? Annoying? Brilliantly annoying? You make the call, but it's definitely unique.
