When a bunch of friends got together to initiate Karaoke Kalk the starting point should be a different one: its name. For those who don't know this, Kalk makes a very special part of Cologne, if only for being on the so called 'schl sick' - on the other, on the wrong side of the river Rhine, not in the centre. It all started here, in this part of town, in 1997. For all the autonomy or independence of the music released on Karaoke Kalk, it is difficult to formulate an exact and permanent definition of the essence and feel of this label: there is no established label concept in the traditional sense, but at the same time the decisions about what is to happen on this label are anything but arbitrary. As the family continued to grow, new members joined, while the small bunch of artists that made up the original core moved on - and sometimes even moved away from the initial idea. This is how apparent contradictions evolved, such as the contrast in the music of, for instance, senking and wunder. the latter then did stir up some obvious expectations, as it suddenly got the attention of a completely different group of listeners. Thus, the music of Karaoke Kalk is not intended for a specific set of people, but for many different ones - sometimes abstract electronics, sometimes pop or friendly bass.
