Ghostly International Ghostly International
According to legend, Ann Arbor's Ghostly International label was created in 1999 by Sam Valenti IV in his dorm room at the University of Michigan. Starting out with releases by Tadd Mullinix (aka Dabrye, James T. Cotton) and the electro-compilation 'Tangent 2002: Disco Nouveau', Ghostly has since become one of America's premier channels for a wide range of forward-thinking music, from abstract electronics to avant-pop. Home to artists such as Matthew Dear, Deastro, and Lusine, Ghostly celebrates a diversity of styles that run the electronic gamut. Ghostly also has a prominent sister-label focusing on the straighter techno side of things: Spectral Sound. a

Three years on from 'Lucky Shiner', the currently Berlin-based UK producer releases his second LP on Ghostly. His thorough electronic fusion seems flexible as ever, incorporating exotic percussion and sitar samples, field recordings from around the world. More pensive than his previous, though just as enchanting.

The Brooklyn duo with just two EPs under their belt, appear with their debut album on Ghostly. Soft electronic atmospheres, pensive vocals and a song-based approach between r'n'b and indie pop, at times offering melancholic moments. Although they aren't reinventing any wheels, it's well done and a pleasant listen.

Fourteen years since his debut album, Jeff McIlwain releases his third artist album on Ghostly doing what he does best in the field of heartfelt electronic pop experimentalism. Melodic and introspective, at times with sweetly floating vocals, he doesn't reinvent the wheel but creates a wholly pleasant listen.

Gold Panda releases four new tracks, showing a change in direction from the pretty sonic clutter of his previous output to a more reduced approach to arrangement. Ideas ebb and evolve more slowly, balanced elegantly between instrumental and electronic, the 'Trust Intro' drone darn stunning too.

'Beams' is Matthew Dear's fourth solo album and completes his metamorphosis from techno producer to versatile pop singer. Covering an range from Talking-Heads-inspired wave funk to indie disco and pop ballads it's nevertheless a cohesive and mature album that should only disappoint his most puristic Audion fans. Recommended.

A compilation of 13 of Com Truise's earlier, unreleased tracks some of which brought for the first time from the nether regions of his studio. Silky, hypercolour synths and slow-grooving drum machine chic in finest form, as worthy a trip as his other 'proper' releases. Check!
