Started out in the mid 1990's by Peter Adarkwah and his partner Ben to promote parties that shouldn't be restricted by any genres or styles, from Brazilian grooves, 70's funk, jazz, hip hop to techno they wanted to hear a bit of everything when they started throwing club nights in London. In late 1996 they expanded their project into a label with the name BBE (Barely Breaking Even) with the first release of what should become an acclaimed compilation series named 'Stop and Listen'. With its motto 'real music for real people' the label has manifested its position with releases from all the different styles they had in mind right from the start.

Chicago is a state of mind. 30 years of house music history have made Chicago a mythical, imaginary place, only loosely related to the actual city. Inspired by DJ Deep's recent tribute compilation, which includes a wealth of international artists, and more...

Claro Intelecto, Redshape, Marcel Dettmann? Chicago, Detroit, and New York? Anyone puzzled by the discrepancies between this compilation's title and its track selection should give it a listen, and we promise that things will clear up pretty quickly.

Chicago, Detroit and New York have long become common topoi in electronic music - abstract concepts, moods, and systems of reference, rather than designations of origin. As electronic music has become globalized, so have the musical styles of Chicago, Detroit, and New York.

No one understands this better than Parisian DJ icon DJ Deep, who has compiled and mixed the third volume in the 'City to City' series for London's BBE label. His track selection combines rare gems by US house music artists like Mike Dunn, Armando, and DJ Traxx, with international productions from Frozen Border, Redshape, or Claro Intelecto.

Unified by fat, jacking drum-machine beats, bouncing basslines and melodramatic string interludes, his selection gels together exceptionally well. Thirteen single tracks are included in the package as well as a 1:17h long, expertly crafted mix. Highly recommended.
