Germany's inimitable magazine for music, media, culture and self discipline, De:Bug, presents one selected album for a special price each month.
'Woah! Have you heard the new Traxman album on Planet Mu?', says Bleed as he storms into the De:bug office. Since no one has, reactions are muted, and Bleed leaves the room, slightly disappointed. Waiting for the subway on the way home I recall this incident, and knowing that music can work wonders in such urban settings I put on said Traxman album, 'The Mind Of Traxman', to see if it might sweeten the commute.
A vibraphone sounds and intones rising an falling seconds. Soft field recordings in the background. A playground? Whatever! Bass and snare drums follow. This already sounds mighty cool. The melody sticks. Sample cut-ups in service of the groove. Excellent. Already I stop minding the fact that my huge backpack doesn't exactly endear me to my fellow peak-time travelers. The second track doesn't change that. Packing real soul into its notes, a saxophone blares. Again thoroughly chaffed and grooving. A smacking snare offers support. A vocal sample follows suit. "Itz Crack". It's getting chaotic. The beat stumbles. The saxophone keeps losing it completely. On top of it all, these soulful chords. I start laughing. To myself of course, considering the situation.

Album released 09-04-2012 on Planet Mu
With over two-decades in Chicago's ghetto house and later juke/footwork scene, Traxman, part of Geto DJz and Ghetto Teknitians, unleashes a pretty almighty collection as his first solo release on Planet Mu. A rich soul, jazz and hiphop slant with acid and electro references, this album shows his unique depth and diversity.

The track breaks off, while the saxophone snaps again. The only logical conclusion to such a juke in peak form. Everyone around me seems to have fallen silent and is wearing an 'I want home' frown. I meanwhile am greatly amusing myself and relive Bleed's morning experience: Surely no one in here has heard the album either. I decide against asking. By the fifth track all is well and truly decided. Brass. A gospel choir. "I Need Some Money". Scuttling percussion. Chicago's juke legend cuts like crazy. How this shakes your mind thoroughly is simply great. I want to dance. Throw my feet around, footwork-style. The subway rocks left and right. That's a start.
Checking facebook I see that Bleed has already proclaimed this 'album of the week'. I like it. The ride is over. 'The Mind Of Traxman' isn't by a long shot. It's uncompromising. It brakes for no one. It keeps bringing something new to the scene. Jazz, acid, rock... Add these hyperactive drums that don't try to hide their 160 BPM. Nevertheless reduced and and never grating. 18 tracks of pure energy, pure euphoria. "Lifeeeee if forever", the last track, the only one steering towards half-step and epic pads. Again an abrupt ending.
