The United States' capital has featured in so many Hollywood pictures that the city itself, along with its numerous monuments, has become an icon of popular culture. Washington's image coined by its clean high-security government district is however far removed from the city's actual living conditions, where a high crime, poverty and illiteracy rate provide a high potential for social conflict. Washington is famous for its underground music, both in the punk and hardcore scene - being home to legendary Bad Brains and Ian MacKaye's Dischord label - as well as for club music, where Washington's 'go-go' style competes with neighbouring Baltimore's 'B-more' sound for popularity and international attention.
