Austria's capital boast a population of close to 2 million and, despite its rapid modernisation in recent decades, still preserves the slightly morbid charm of its former imperial glory. During the 90s Vienna caught the eye of the global techno community through the idiosyncratic labels and producers coming from the city, spearheaded by the hugely influential Cheap Records, run by Patrick Pulsinger and Erdem Tunakan, Pomelo and the short-lived Mainframe label, home to early rave-stars Ilsa Gold. In 1993 Kruder & Dorfmeister's debut EP became a phenomenal success and firmly established Vienna as a major focus point for the downbeat / lounge music scene, giving rise to a legion of Austrian producers pursuing the style. In 1994, Mainframe spawned Central Records and Mego, the former emphasising the close ties between Vienna and Detroit, consequently moving to Berlin in 1999, the latter becoming a pioneering label for experimental avant-garde electronica. While the heydays of global media attention might have passed, the city still boasts a innovative and diverse electronic music scene, from the Detroit-style electro of TRUST to the tongue-in-cheek disco sounds of Diskokaine, the high-brow electronica of Mosz and the constant stream of quality releases coming from the not-so-small Klein Records.
