A small market town before 1848, Swindon's size has significantly increased during the industrial revolution, largely due to its railway works. A further increase in population came about with the Town Development Act of 1952 and the city is now home to some 150.000 Swindonians. Swindon is also widely known for its roundabouts, the largest of which being called the 'magic' one.
