The capital of the Russian Empire for more than two hundred years, St. Petersburg has been in constant competition with Moscow for the position of Russia's leading city. Founded by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg is a - by European standards - relatively young city, it however looks back on an eventful history as a key location in the communist revolution, a major battleground of WWII and as the second largest metropolis of modern day Russia.
