Known under the name Molotovsk during Soviet times, Severodvinsk is major city in the north-west of Russia. Its main industry is ship building, especially of military ships and submarines. The decline of that industry in recent times has led to a large-scale migration from the city: The population has dwindled from 250.000 in 1992 to 190.000 in 2007.
