Founded by a the Gaulish tribe known as the Namnetes in 70 BC, Nantes looks back on an eventful (and bloody) history. During the 17th century, the city became the largest sea port on the west coast of France - mainly though slave trade prior to its abolition. After turning into an industrial centre in the 19th century, Nantes now stands as France's sixth-largest city.
