London's dance music culture is quite possibly unrivalled by any other city in the world - its artists, labels and clubs are always on the lookout for new musical influences, constantly creating new styles and scenes. London was the first European city that pinned its eyes on Detroit and Chicago, quickly adapting acid house and techno as the ideal soundtrack to the rave phenomenon. As the next global phenomenon, drum 'n' bass grew out of London's jungle/hardcore scene and became one of the biggest music innovations in the second half of the 1990s. The recent development of dubstep brought the city's common high-paced breaks once again closer to the more reduced electronic music style prevailing in Berlin and elsewhere on the continent - providing a fertile ground for experimentation and putting London once again at the centre for musical innovation.
