Named after the favourite hunting grounds of emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Kaiserslautern is home to around 100,000 people today, with an additional 50,000 NATO military personnel members stationed in its vicinity. With more than 60% of the city destroyed in WWII, Kaiserslautern today is a modern centre of information and communications technology and home to a well-known university, a technical college and many international research institutes.
