The city of Jena is well known for its university, which was founded in 1558 and has had some of the most brilliant minds in German history teaching there: From Friedrich Schiller to Johann Gottlieb Fichte, from Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel to Clemens Brentano. In the 20th century Jena was mainly an industrial city, with the well known Carl Zeiss optical works alone providing work for up to 60.000 people, while in recent years Jena has successfully managed to revive its tradition as a center of science and education.
