Graz is Austria's second largest city, capital of the province of Styria and an important university town. Its southern location in close proximity to Slovenia and Hungary lends the city multi-cultural and almost Mediterranean flair, further making Graz an important cultural nexus. The city hosts one of Austria's major art festivals - the 'Steirische Herbst' ('Styrian Autumn') - and being the European Capital of Culture in 2003 has further given Graz an opportunity for investments in contemporary art and architecture, including the impressive 'Kunsthaus' by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, and Vito Acconci's 'Mur Island'. Graz boasts a rich music scene and is home to two major electronic music festivals - 'Spring' and the smaller and more experimental 'Elevate'.
