Founded in 1157, Fribourg (or Freiburg in German) is famous for its medieval centre, which has been preserved as a whole and is now one of the largest in Europe. The city is located right on the Swiss language border of German and French, but the German speaking part of the population has been constantly in decline since the industrialization of the 1800s.
