Capital city of the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf is a major cultural centre, home to famous 20th century artists like Joseph Beuys and his students Markus Lüppertz and Jörg Immendorff. Music-wise Kraftwerk are probably the city's most well-known sons, but Düsseldorf should be also noted for its influential punk and experimental scene in the early 80s, with bands like DAF, NEU!, Der Plan and Fehlfarben.
In the 90s Düsseldorf's musical legacy has been continued by acts like experimental pop group Mouse on Mars and producers like Loco Dice.
