Dresden, meaning people of the riverside forest in an Old Sorbian language, is situated on the River Elbe and is the capital of the German Federal Free State of Saxony. The city owes much of its cultural and artistic splendour to the Electors and Kings of Saxony who kept their royal residences there. The city was tragically destroyed by Allied aerial bombing towards the end of WW II. Owing to this devastating event, Dresden has spent the last 40 years rebuilding and renovating much of its once majestic architecture. However, this process has also given way to a rebirth of sorts and allowed the city to build upon its Baroque design and history and grow with it rather than move away from it.
