Named Karl-Marx-Stadt in the times of the GDR, Chemnitz is a former centre of industry ("the Saxon Manchester"), which had a population of over 300.000 as early as 1913. Bombed to ruins during WWII, Chemnitz was largely rebuilt as a socialist 'model city' during the 1950s. While the importance of its heavy industry has waned in recent decades, Chemnitz remains one of the most important East German cities in economy, culture and science.
