A population of over 200.000 Carolorégiens makes Charleroi the fourth largest city in Belgium and the largest one in Wallonia, the country's French-speaking region. Its predominant heavy industry gave the Charleroi area the byname Pays Noir - Black country - but as in most of Europe, the city's industrial sector has been in decline ever since WWII.
