The capital and largest city of Venezuela, Caracas is located in close proximity of the Carribean Sea, but separated from the coast by a high mountain range. Caracas' foundations were laid in 1567 by the Spanish captain Diego de Losada. It is the birthplace of Simón Bolívar, who famously led Venezuela to independence from Spain in 1821. Today Caracas is one of Latin America's economic centres, not least because of Venezuela's rich oil deposits.
