The area of Budapest was first settled by the Celts before 1 AD and in 1361 the castle-town of Buda became the capital of Hungary. In 1873 the two cities located on oposing banks of the Danube, Buda and Pest, are united as Budapest, growing into the present day metropolis with around 2 million inhabitants. When it comes to alternative pop music the city is famous for its huge annual Sziget festival, and while Budapest's music scene lost its autonomous Kultiplex venue to real estate investors in 2008, there are still several clubs and bars promoting underground rock and electronic music.
