One of England's largest cities with half a million inhabitants, Bristol has significantly contributed to the UK's underground music scene during the past decades: Mark Stewart's The Pop Group pioneered the fusion of new wave, punk funk and dub in the 80s, while in the 90s the 'Bristol sound' became synonymous with the indie-rock informed trip-hop of Tricky, Portishead, Smith & Mighty and Massive Attack. Roni Size hails from Bristol, as does Banksy, arguably the world's best-known street artist. These days the city is a fertile ground for all kinds of dubstep, with prominent artists like DJ Pinch or Appleblim representing the Bristol scene.
