More then any other Chinese city, Beijing embodies China's imperial past, socialist present, as well as the country's current process of rapid modernization. The city looks back on many thousand years of history, serving as China's capital during most of this time. Beijing's medieval areas are offset by gargantuan high-rise buildings of its financial district, and traditional culture and and a recently thriving modern art and night-life scene exist side by side. Clubs like Yugongyishan, China Doll, Tango or White Rabbit regularly bring international electronic music artists to Beijing.
