Hello,

Patrick Pulsinger is one of the founding fathers of Vienna's electronic music scene and for many years ran the influential Cheap Records label together with partner-in-crime Erdem Tunakan. Neither one to be eager nor easy to please, Pulsinger is known as a sublime taste-maker, whose credits range from pioneering the fusion of jazz and techno to remixing the Pet Shop Boys.

Having just produced albums of Elektro Guzzi and Hercules & Love Affair, curated a stage at Sónar, and released a new solo full-length, which received album-of-the-month accolades in de:bug magazine, Pulsinger is once again of top of things, and we take the occasion to turn the spotlight on his work and the Cheap Records label.

 FEATURED RELEASE

Album released 18-06-2010 on Disko B
Fans of Patrick Pulsinger's techno productions have been waiting quite a long time for a new solo album by the Austrian producer. 2007's 'Dogmatic Sequences - The Series' was more of a beefed up collection of the man's legendary 1990s production, while 2002's 'Easy To Assemble. Hard To Take Apart.' was a ground-breaking free-jazz affair, but unlikely to please those hungry for dance-floor fodder.

All rumours about a new Pulsinger techno album can now officially be put to rest with the release of 'Impassive Skies', the long-awaited successor to his 'Porno' album from 1994.

And a worthy successor it has turned out to be, not only showing off the sonic possibilities of Pulsinger's fabled gear park, but also the sophistication of his production skills over the past two decades. Collaborations are further a theme of the album, and bar the sublime jazz track 'Cache Wash', all tracks feature guest artists like Fennesz, Abe Duque, Elektro Guzzi, Gigolo's G. Rizo and Bunny Lake's Teresa Rotschopf.

Travelling from techno to jazz, electro and sonic experimentalism, and unified by Pulsinger's unique sense for crisp production, 'Impassive Skies' is an impeccable addition to the Austrian producer's admirable body of work.
 MORE CHEAP ESSENTIALS

Album released 09-03-2007 on Disko B
Patrick Pulsinger compiles all parts of his 'Dogmatic Sequences' on on album - two of which have appeared in the mid-90s, and the third one took dance-floors apart in 2006. From techno slammers like 'Numb Thrust' to the Richard Dorfmeister collaboration 'City Lights (Pt. 2)', this is all classics.
Album released 01-10-2009 on BigBeak Recordings
Following up on Patrick Pulsinger's previous jazz excursions 'Easy To Assemble, Hard To Take Apart', dp-S is a collaboration project of the Austrian producer with bassist Werner Dafeldecker. 'Conjecture' combines abstract jazz fused with modular electronic sound generation. Highly Recommended.
Album released 31-05-2010 on Macro Recordings
Stunning début album of Vienna's Elektro Guzzi - techno's first real live band. Recorded live with a classic set-up of guitar, bass and drums and masterfully engineered by Patrick Pulsinger, this record breaks down the demarcation line separating man from machine. Murder material!
Album released 01-03-2002 on BigBeak Recordings
Originally released in 2002, Patrick Pulsinger's future jazz opus 'Easy To Assemble, Hard To Take Apart', gets re-issued on his own Big Beak Recordings. Certainly influenced by the acid jazz sounds of Miles Davis, Pulsinger's mastery of balancing classical and electronic elements is on display.
EP released 09-07-2007 on Trust
Patrick Pulsinger teams up with Trust's DJ Glow for this 2007 electro slammer: 'Television Is Reality' is an epic electro track with a memmorable hook-line, which is backed by the 4-by-4 grooves of 'Floorwave' and 'Plowing the Dark'. Great sci-fi material.
Album released 12-01-1997 on Cheap Records
An absolutely classic album by Pulsinger & Tunakan from 1997, 'Carrera' still stands tall with its brilliant mix of free-style sampling, sophisticated breaks and analogue production. This is the album that can be credited for bringing jazz (back) into techno in a good way. Essential.
Album released 08-05-1995 on Disko B
If you'd have to name three of the most important electronic albums to emerge out of Austria, Patrick Pulsinger's 'Porno' would certainly range among them. Heavily influenced by the Robert Hood and M-Plant connection established around the time, 'Porno' is straight minimal techno funk bliss.
Maxi-Single released 07-06-2010 on R&S Records
Classic Patrick Pulsinger EP that originally appeared on Disko B and was licensed to R&S. 'Construction Tool' is a massive, raw minimal techno monster which still sounds incredibly fresh today. 'City Lights' is bossa infused groover with Mr. Dorfmeister joining the control tower.
Compilation released 30-04-2004 on Cheap Records
10 years of label work has surely given Cheap Records something to show for and this compilation collects some of the seminal label's finest moments. From Robert Hood's 'Stark Reality' to iO's 'Claire', there's plenty of classics you'll find on here, along with some more off-beat material from the label's vaults.
Album released 01-11-1995 on Cheap Records
One of Potuznik's finest releases. 'Up North They Are Free' has dry and jacking 909 jams sit by side with funky wild-pitch acid, and 'Solid Gold' is still one of our favourite Potuznik tracks, employing a jazzy 6 by 4 rhythm that you shouldn't even try to mix.
Maxi-Single released 01-01-1995 on Cheap Records
Pivotal release in the recording career of MPC wizard Mr. Elin. Shortly before starting the European house revival with his Auto Repeat moniker he dropped a massive three tracker of sähköesque, industrial killers. Check 'Lingua' and you will know the game. Ace.
Maxi-Single released 01-03-1996 on Cheap Records
Constructed of minimalistic distorted drum patterns in true Mika Vaino fashion, 'Keimola' surprises as an abstract, yet groovy techno EP, more direct and danceable than many of Vainio's other productions. Kentolevi is an anagram of Vaino's Tekonivel pseudonym, but another fitting one would be 'Evil Tekno'... Heavily recommended.
Album released 03-10-1999 on Cheap Records
Discovered in the bar of a Viennese hotel, Louie Austen launched quite a remarkable second career backed by the Cheap Records all-stars. Combining Austen's rat pack crooning with abstract electronics provided by Mario Neugebauer, 'Consequences' is a remakably playful and distinct album.
EP released 10-05-2001 on Cheap Records
Quite an underrated release on Cheap Records from 2001, Nuwalker's 'Pro.Files' exhibits a combination of analog house music production and the sensible songwriting and execution of Ken Cesar on vocals. Forgotten gem and insider's tip!
Double-Album released 15-10-1995 on Cheap Records
Legendary release comprising all three iO records 'Attack', 'Decay' and 'Sustain Release' on one album. Ranging from hard techno tracks to uplifting and timeless classics such as 'Claire' and 'Crossroads', the importance of this album is hard to put into words. Classic!
Album released 01-01-1996 on Morbid Records
A classic album by the Cheap Records super-group of Pulsinger, Tunakan, Potuznik, Golini, and Florian Sokol - and slightly overlooked, since it appeared on Cheap subsidiary Morbid. Unjustly so - this is a stone-cold classic of tripped out, jazzed up techno and electro funk. Must have.
