Hello,
Shorter days mean longer nights, so why not make the best of them with some pure-bred, booming techno music. Recent essentials in the 4-to-the-floor department come from Terence Fixmer, who celebrates his creative resurgence with 'Comedy of Menace', Gerd's revived Literon project, Stefan Goldman, heading into harder techno territories, and a wealth of international producers from Ambivalent to Zoo Brazil.
Fans of classic techno styles should further check our latest podcast, our City Focus on Los Angeles, which features interviews with Santiago Salazar, Silent Servant and John Tejada. |
MORE TECHNO ESSENTIALS

After his release on Frantic Flowers two years ago it has been pretty silent around Gerd's Literon alias. Now he returns with two rawer house tracks with a dirty groove combined with phat production and deep sub bass. Perfect tracks for dark clubs with a blazin sound system.

Usually known for his subtlety, Macro's Stefan Goldmann drops a techno bomb this time around. Maze's parts 1 and 2 are prime time jackers with distorted drums and equally grungy, free-styling synth lines. Part 3 complements this with some similarly styled, but beatless electro-acoustics.

Massive Poker Flat compilation for a special price: 33 tracks sum up the classic label's recent work, with contributions from Steve Bug, Martin Landsky, Donnacha Costello, John Tejada, Adultnapper, David Durango, and many, many more. A treasure chest of deep techno sounds. Get.

Another big Cocoon mix compilation, this 'Green&Blue' edition has Steve Bug and Chris Tietjen mix 33 of their current faves in just under 2:30h. A who's who of tech-house, from James Kumo to Kink, from Kenny Larkin to Nikola Gala. Recommended.

Following up on the recent - and excellent - Luke Hess release, Echocord Colour issues one of Mike Dehnert's finest outings yet. The Fachwerk chief and Tresor resident further elaborates on a sound steeped in the rich techno heritage of his homebase, Berlin. Deep, dubby, and heavy on the low end - recommended.

Maxi-Single released 13-09-2010 on M-Plant
Two more deadly killer cuts from the don of minimal techno Robert Hood. Once again essential, funked-up, banging techno which shouldn't be missed by anyone under any circumstances. Do we hear some UK funky styles there on 'Clash'? Huge recommendation.

More delicious Teutonic dub techno cuts by one of Germany's leading producers of the bespoke genre, Marko Fürstenberg. Definitely designed to cause damage on big floors this is some of the most convincing material we have heard from him in recent times.
Jason Fine once again shows us how things are done in Detroit, MI. Four great cuts of lo-fi deepness, bassy 808s grooves, deep house strings, and even a touch of classical electro on the closing track, 'Red'. As always with Fine and Kontra-Musik, this one's highly recommended.
James Ruskin, Function & Jerome Sydenham step up to the plate to remix Luke Slater's most recent techno monster, 'GT'. Ruskin slurs the track's characteristic cowbells for a highly effective, minimalistic stomper, while Funtion and Sydenham deliver a slightly more classic techno take.
Another storming release of fresh techno interpretations by the eclectic Field label. Delta Funktionen delivers a spot-on cut once again, proving why he is one of the most talked about names among technoheads at the moment. Duplex and Ohrwert don't disappoint either. Great EP!

Long-standing Ostgut resident Andy Baumecker teams up with Sam 'Voltek' Barker. The title track wraps a shifting chord layer around an equally unsteady bassdrum to great effect. 'The Hole' is straighter Berghain techno, and 'Refugee Hipster' features Jimmy Edgar for a slight dubsteppy touch. Excellent.

EP released 11-09-1992 on Bunker
Bunker 001 marked the beginning of an era and its lo-fi madness still sounds as striking as it did back in 1991. Unit Moebius are rightfully regarded as the European answer to Underground Resistance and we'd love to hear this timeless techno document the next time we go out.

Glasgow's Edit Select has been leading the charge as of late in the UK for his brand of kick-driven, warehouse techno. 'Recluse' is deep and introspective, while 'Surface To Air' is strictly for the dancefloor with its chest-thumping kicks and hypnotic drifting hi-hats.
A nice surprise on Hypnotic Room comes in form of 'Wheels of Misfortune' by Dave Tarrida, a banging piece of syncopated Brighton-style techno. Remixes by Ascii Disko and newcomer Kultrun, as well as two additional Tarrida tracks, 'Out Of Time' and 'Total Confusion'.
Osaka might be a long shot away from the epicentres of techno music, but Iori Asana proves that the sounds of bleepy, minimalistic techno have become an international commodity. Returning to the excellent Prologue label, 'Light Echo EP' offers three hypnotic cuts of prime grade sine-wave techno.

John Andreson's latest work comes in four different mixes and four bonus DJ tools for the more ambitious prosumers. His minimalistic and atmospheric 'Match' receives a contemporary house update by Manchester's Mark Holmes, while Tim Xavier delivers a programmatic 'Berghain Remix'.
The latest in Cocoon's split series has Maetrik share a release with Miami-based newcomer Simon Wish. Wish's minimal vocal bleeper meets a killer wild pitch techhouse cut by Eric Estornel on the flip. Quality as usual from Cocoon.
Veteran Tokyo producer Hidenobu Ito steps up the intensity a notch with his 'Shepard Tone EP' for Dapayk's Mo's Ferry imprint. Two highly functional exercises in hard-hitting techno come a bit as a surprise from the artist, but should prove efficient floor bangers on those cold winter nights.
Donnacha Costello devises a new alias, MSF, for a white (or rather black) label release that should grab the immediate attention of all Ostgut-style techno fans. Dark, analogue and minimalistic, 'Meaning Formation' is one for the big floors, while Costello's musicality shines through on 'Signification'. Excellent.

Whether on the long-format or on single, Swayzak know how to impress. 'Rons Conneticut Dub' is a trippy minimal piece, which holds its old-school chord progression back until minute 5. 'Montanza' is a bleepy Detroit-tech-style track on the flip. Nice one.

EP released 15-09-2010 on Minus
Following hot on the heals of his recent 'Rumors' EP, 'Down' is another bassy groover from Ambivalent, who makes it clear that he ain't takin' shit from no one, when it comes to pumping dancefloor material. 'Train To Baltimore' is more spacious material, receiving the remix treatment from Paco Osuna.

First album for Arne Weinberg's Onmutu Mechanicks guise on Echocord. Serving as a project for all things abstract and dub-influenced, 'Nocturne' combines dub techno and the deep melodic techno that he is known for. A slightly different take on the genre, which comes highly recommended.
Thomas Brinkmann revives his Soul Center alias for an album project for Shitkatapult, who are begging for a 'rude cover of the month' award with their packaging of 'General Eclectics'. Ten tracks combine Cologne shuffle-step grooves with genuine synth funk that lets those juices flow, erhm... Fine album!

A new addition to the roster of Speedy J's Electric Deluxe imprint is LA's David Flores a.k.a. Audio Injection, who delivers four pumping, industrial techno cuts on his debut for the label. Two DJ-friendly 12-minute-long remakes come from Speedy J, and an additional remix by fellow Californian Drumcell.
