Founded by the man behind the highly regarded Portable and Bodycode projects, Süd Electronic's gestation can be traced back to the Johannesburg suburb of Yeoville, where then teenagers Alan Abrahams and Lerato Khathi first crossed paths in 1991. Sharing a common passion for the Chicago house sounds of Armando, Phuture, and Mr. Fingers, the two converted an old theatre into a small club, called Planet Hendon, and experimented with music production. Khathi eventually moved to Toronto to finish her film studies she had commenced in South Africa, while Abrahams professionalised his music making, compiling the influential album project 'Dance For Freedom' in 1994, which coincided with the country's first free elections.
In 1997 however, both relocated to London, with a mission to spread their musical ideas. Abrahams chose the Portable moniker for his productions and together they began DJing at various bars and clubs in London. They went on to establish their own alternative events in 2000, which saw live performances from a lot of the contemporary minimal artists such as Sutekh, Safety Scissors, Farben and Andy Vaz, introducing a lot of these artists for the first time to a London audience.

In October 2002 Portable and Lerato set up their own label, Süd Electronic, with a goal of releasing innovative music by artists who shared their creative vision. Using minimalism as 'a reference point, rather than a restrictive box of rules and regulations', as Lerato puts it, Süd Electronic has since released music by an international cast of forward thinking producers, such as Farben, Sutekh, Tomas Jirku, Andy Vaz, Jay Haze, Lump, Am/Pm and Akiko Kiyama. Many of the label's most highly regarded releases were however produced by Portable himself, whose album 'Powers Of Ten' was released to international acclaim in late 2007.

Alan Abrahams has recently relocated to Lisbon, Portugal, casting a shade of doubt over the continuation of Süd Electronic. With 'Knowone Can Take Away' he has however just released a brilliant 12" for German label Perlon, while Lerato has set up another label, Uzuri Recordings, so future musical output from the remarkable pair seems assured.
