Started in 2006 by Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards and James Masters, Rekids has managed to become one of the defining labels for smart contemporary techno, on occasion reaching out to genres as diverse as disco, house and hip hop.
The label's brilliant eclecticism can be traced back to Matt Edwards' colourful history as a DJ, producer and remixer: Having started out spinning in London's legendary Milk Bar in 1992, as well as the new superclub at the time, Ministry of Sound, Edwards is by no means a newcomer to the UK's vibrant club community. The influence of almost two decades of professional music experience can clearly be discerned in his productions, be it his classic, spot-on techno productions as his most instantly recognisable nom de guerre Radio Slave, the slower rhythmic funk of Rekid, or his Quiet Village project, which altogether does away with synthetic club beats in favour of dubbed out funk and disco collages.
Rekids is however not built on the strength of Edwards' productions alone. Over the past years label owners Edwards and Masters have managed to gather an impressive pool of artists around them: House veteran and longtime Derrick Carter running-mate Luke Solomon for instance, who has released his stand-out album 'The Difference Engine' on the label last year, or Toby Tobias, whose delicate disco house productions have long become an integral part of Rekids' stylistic spectrum. Add to this an exclusive selection of remixers - Jesse Rose, Shed, Simon Baker, John Daly, Dubfire, Roman Flügel, Sebo K, Prins Thomas, I:Cube, Slam or Claude VonStroke to name but a few - and it's easy to see why Rekids is currently being tipped as one of the hottest labels around. |
