Claude VonStroke
Raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Barclay Crenshaw fell in love with the beat by listening to popular broadcasts of the Electrifying Mojo's Midnight Funk Association on local radio. After unsuccessfully trying to persuade Juan Atkins to hire him as sound engineer at age 16, Crenshaw got into the film industry, eventually relocating to San Francisco and directing a documentary on DJ culture called...

Richie Hawtin
Over the course of a career spanning two decades, Richie Hawtin has earned his position as one of the most prominent figureheads of contemporary electronic music. Born in Banbury, England, his family moved to Windsor, Canada, in the late 1970's, where Hawtin was exposed to early techno from close-by Detroit. Together with John Acquaviva he started Plus 8 Records, a label which proved one of the most...

New Year Countdown 2009 by zero"
Thirty to Zero: Our favourites of 2009 - 31 free tracks in 31 days.

As 2009 draws to a close we can't help but get all misty-eyed and start to reminisce over what an outstanding year it has been for new, exciting music.

We'd like to take advantage of the end of year quiet spell to look back on 31 of our favourite tracks for 2009. To tip our hats in appreciation to all of you who have supported zero" this year, we are giving one of these 31 tracks away for free download every day the entire month of December!

Each day a different code will be given out - sometimes on a zero" page, sometimes on one of the blogs we enjoy reading.

01/01/10: 2009 has ended and so has Thirty to Zero. Thanks to everyone who participated, spread the word and gave us feedback - we hope you enjoyed our selection. More good stuff: During January we are offering 50 of our favourite albums of 2009 for a special price - so happy digging and hope to see you around!
Jeff Samuel
Originally hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Jeff Samuel was exposed to music from both Detroit and Chicago early on, with both cities located within driving distance from Cleveland. Samuel's stand-out minimal techno productions quickly found prominent supporters in Michael Mayer and Daniel Bell - the former contributed a remix to Samuel's first ever release, while the latter released his 'New Joob' EP on...

Donnacha Costello
Making music since 1989, Donnacha Costello discovered electronic minimalism in 1996 and has since established himself as one of Ireland's most respected underground artists. Deep and introspective house music alternates with 70s influenced electronica in Costello's work, and consequently his music has appeared both on techno labels like Poker Flat as well as on experimental imprints like Raster-Noton.

Swayzak
Swayzak - apparently in Polish this means 'union' - was founded 1996 London by James Taylor (a.k.a. Darkfarmer) and David Brown. They have been making music together since 1993 and run their own label Swayzak Recordings (besides 240 volts run by Taylor alone). Their eclectic releases appear on their own label as well as on !K7, and regularly cause a stir within the scene. Ever since their hit album 'Dirty...

Luciano
Born in 1978, Lucien Nicolet started out as a DJ in 1993 promoting numerous clubs in Santiago de Chile alongside many innovators of the Latin American electronic music scene such as Señor Coconut (a.k.a. Atom Heart), Ricardo Villalobos or Dandy Jack. In 2000 he moved to Switzerland, releasing his music on Mental Groove, Klang Elektronik and Peacefrog, either as Luciano or as twin alter ego Lucien-N-Luciano. In...

Raudive
Britain's Oliver Ho is best known for the music he has produced for Blueprint and his own label Meta for over more than a decade. Making a name for himself by pioneering percussive techno in tune with the styles of Jeff Mills or Adam Beyer, Ho has always maintained a more experimental edge over many of his peers by delving deeper into the polyrhythmic possibilities of his style. Feeling the urge to...
