The 20th zero" podcast stars one of today's most prolific and versatile electronic music producers, Brendon Moeller.
Born and raised in South Africa, Moeller left his Johannesburg home, teaching career, and fledgling indie band behind when he moved to New York in 1994. In absence of his band mates, he turned to electronic means of production, releasing his first 12" on Sm:)e Communications in 1997. Eventually one of his demos, recorded under the name Beat Pharmacy, ended up with New York house music legend Francois K, leading to a long-lasting and fruitful relationship. Over the past decade Brendon Moeller released five Beat Pharmacy albums and around a dozen singles via Francois K's Deep Space Media and Wave Music imprints, defining a unique sound of electronic dub that draws on acoustic instrumentation as well as on influences from Moeller's past as a drummer. Expanding his stylistic range beyond his signature Beat Pharmacy sound, Moeller began to record under his own name as well as under his new alias, Echologist, contributing his music to a staggering amount of great labels, from neo-disco imprint Eskimo, over dubstep labels like Apple Pips, to the Danish home of dub-techno, Echocord. In late 2009 Moeller started a label of his own, Steadfast, which is already approaching its tenth release. And Brendon Moeller shows no sign of slowing down: His new single, 'Close Up', has just been released on the brilliant Dutch Ann Aimee label, while Echologist's techno bomb 'Connect' has been dropped via Jochem Paap's Electric Deluxe imprint. |
