Few labels can claim to have defined the sound of a city in the way that Mobilee Records has shaped the sound of Berlin over the last three years. With over fourty releases since 2005, the year the label was founded by Anja Schneider and partner Ralf Kollmann, Mobilee has had a decisive influence on the hegemony of minimal techno over dance floors from the German capital to the Balearic islands.
Most Mobilee releases come from their tightly knit family of artists: Sebo K, responsible for many of the label's most highly regarded productions, Berlin crews Pan-Pot and Exercise One, London's GummiHz and Poznan's Marcin Czubala, all of which have received international recognition through their affiliation with Mobilee. Something that has come true for Cologne-born label owner Anja Schneider as well, who has progressed from locally known radio DJ (her show 'Dance Under The Blue Moon' can be heard every Saturday on Berlin's Fritz FM) to international DJ celebrity in only a few years time.

With a legion of producers having jumped on the minimal bandwagon by now, it's easy to forget that Mobilee's success is not just based on hype: In their finest moments Mobilee releases combine the arithmetic precision pioneered by Robert Hood with a modern deep house vibe and impeccable production qualities that make them shine on any sound system.

As minimal techno slowly but steadily recedes to its natural habitat, the after hours club, it will be interesting to see the direction in which Mobilee will evolve the style it has championed for so long. The recent full-lengths on the label - Anja Schneider's Paul Brtschitsch-produced 'Beyond The Valley' and Marcin Czubala's 'Chronicles Of Never' (to be released this Friday, September 29) might not stray too far from the classic Mobilee sound, but it's the label's most recent signing to the label that has come as a surprise to many: UK techno pioneer Russ Gabriel. Known from his Ferox label and as a versatile producer, Gabriel has just contributed his first release to Mobilee, 'The Fall Guy', which convincingly applies minimalist reduction to his classic Detroit-style chords and rhythms. A taste of things to come?
