Actress has amazed us all this year with his ability to think outside the box, with music that seemed to transgress all boundaries of style and genre, space and time.
Releasing his sophomore album 'Splazsh' on equally free-spirited label Honest Jon's was a stroke of genius, far expanding Actress' audience beyond the narrow confines of the electronic music community.
An audience the London-based producer is fully deserving of, since he managed to create a unique signature sound, as purposefully lo-fi as it is inspired, from influences as disparate as late 70s synth music, funk, dubstep and techno.
The album's single, 'Maze', perfectly epitomises Actress' unique approach. It's synth melodies hark back to the days of early Sheffield electronica, its beats allude to both classic electro and cutting-edge dubstep. Nostalgic and futuristic in equal measure, 'Maze' stood out like no other track this year.

Toronto's Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White undoubtedly delivered the year's biggest club tune with 'Without You', a sparse and impeccably arranged tech house track with truly memorable and hauntingly heartbroken vocals. 30 down, one more to go - stay tuned for our number zero tomorrow!

Mount Kimbie's debut 'Crooks & Lovers' on Hotflush made a massive impact this year, as the music world went crazy for their unique spine-tingling mix of cloudy textures, r'n'b vocals and off-kilter beats. This track from the album was just one gem of many, typifying their irresistible charm.

This collaboration between Soulphiction and the elusive MK on Philpot absolutely blew us away earlier this year. Recorded live without post-edits, 'Got A Minute' oozes a mesmerizing groove and the deepest soulful vocals to have you dribbling and/or weeping on the dancefloor. Magnificent.

Vidal and Vangelis Vargas' 'Raíz' EP was our favourite dub-techno release of the year, and Historia y Violencia's own Silent Servant adds even more punch to the slamming original. Its hypnotically pulsing chords and subtly grooving beat made this a sure-fire hit in 2010.

Track released 10-11-2010 on Trouw
The Amsterdam-based producer's debut album 'Vapour' on the Trouw label was an utterly refreshing take on modern techno this year. This track 'Sub' with its bendy bells, twisted chords and stripped down infectious rhythm was an absolutely stand-out track on a great album.

|
Valerie Trebeljahr's pioneering indietronica group Lali Puna made a welcome return this year with a lovely comeback album on Morr Music, entitled 'Our Inventions'. The album's endearing single, 'Remember', is a perfect slice of electronic pop, guaranteed to brighten up any grey and cloudy Christmas Day.

We wish you all a merry Christmas with one of the most beautiful songs released all year: Martina Topley-Bird's 'Phoenix' off her album 'Some Place Simple', which not only had the former Tricky collaborator find her own artistic voice, but also contributed to a great year for the Honest Jon's label.

Leipzig's Kassem Mosse's single on Instra:mental's Nonplus Records had us pretty much clawing at the walls this year. With a bolshy kick and trippy shadows, the raw, deep and detailed mystique of this track completely won us over, as did the killer 'Hi Res' on the flip. Outstanding.

|
Darkstar's 'North' on Hyperdub was one of the most unique and engaging pop albums of the year. This remix by Dial's upcoming star John Roberts breathed an ingenious new life into the original, breaking it up with oozing synths and lush claps that made us positively swoon.

Conforce and Delta Funktionen have established the Netherlands' northern-most province, Friesland, as a hotspot for deep techno this year. Conforce's 'Grace' was a definite highlight - an 8.5 minute goosebump inducing techno epic.

Track released 10-10-2010 on Rekids
Rekids had another strong year in 2010 and the sweet remix release featuring Kenny Larkin and DJ Sneak was icing on the cake. Kenny Larkin's epic rework of Radio Slaves 'I Don't Need A Cure For This' defined the premium grade innovative techno Rekids always hit all the right buttons with.

Scuba aimed for the stylistic expansion of dubstep this year, both with his Hotflush label and his excellent second album 'Triangulation', which more than lived up to its multi-disciplinary ambitions. 'Before' was the album's pop crossover hit - the spirit of Kruder & Dorfmeister channelled into a modern downbeat classic.

For a truly special moment this Meakusma brought together Detroit's minimal pioneer Terrence Dixon and Venetian house don Ra.H, whose Upperground Orchestra converts Dixon's 'Room 310' into a 9 minute techno-jazz epic.

One of the sleeper hits of the year and a masterpiece in restraint: Pirahnahead's 'Self Conscience' takes a full six minutes before letting loose its infectious hook-line in all its pizzicato glory. By that time however, everyone was already on their feet wherever this was dropped.

The man from Chelmsford (home of Ceephax and Squarepusher) was one of the high flyers this year with his releases on Ghostly International, most notably his brilliant debut album 'Lucky Shiner'. Its opener and single, 'You', was a genuine pop electronica hit and quickly became Gold Panda's signature tune.

|
Another fantastic year for the Ostgut Ton label, and incidentally its fifth, a fact celebrated with a spectacular label compilation. The collaboration debut of Berghain residents Barker & Baumecker, 'Candyflip', was one of the label's many highlights in 2010, a track defined by its complex interplay of chord and kick drum patterns.

Âme have always put quality before quantity and their only single release this year, 'Rrose Sélavy'', was yet another testament to the duo's greatness. 'Junggesellenmaschine's electro-acoustic percussions were held together by a strong melodic back-bone for one of this year's finest dance-floor anthems.

Track released 06-09-2010 on Kompakt
This year Superpitcher returned with his album 'Kilimanjaro' on Kompakt after a quiet few years. 'Black Magic' was one of the more nostalgic and disco-inflected songs from the album, complete with a cheeky italo groove and sleazy whispered vocals. Lush!

2010 has been the year where Sandwell District really hit their stride. The individual styles of Function, Regis, and Silent Servant perfectly complement each other, as impressively demonstrated by the collective's two label samplers. Regis' edit of this Silent Servant track was one of the definite high points of the year.

|
Donnacha Costello's 'Before We Say Goodbye' was one of our favourite techno albums this year, and its first track, 'Leaving Berlin', proved particularly infectious. Perfectly representing Costello's unique sense of melody, emotion, and drama, these piano chords just wouldn't let go of us anymore.

2010 saw the tenth anniversary of Burnt Friedman's Nonplace label and a superb compilation to celebrate the label's truly unique jazz/dub output over the years. This luscious track sees Berlin's Basic Channel veteran Mark Ernestus getting his dubby expertise on an unreleased Embassadors track.

Track released 12-10-2010 on Dolly
2010 has been a big year for young Dresden based producer Jacob Korn: Three EPs as well as his freshly launched label, Uncanny Valley, proved that deep and soulful techno-house doesn't need to originate in Detroit or Chicago. 'Sundaysun' was one of the high-points in Korn's incredibly productive year.

Track released 24-05-2010 on Present
The masked producer has been on top of his game in 2010, delivering his 'Red Pack' album and remixing the likes of Martyn and The Black Dog. 'Mucky Bones' is Redshape at his best, made of pounding percussions, infectious vocal snippets and a relentlessly grinding synthline. Don't miss his 'Future Shock EP' by the way, out today.

Matthew Herbert's innovative creative output has not slept this year, recomposing Mahler's Tenth Symphony for Deutsche Grammophon, as well as releasing two excellent and very contrasting albums 'One One' and 'One Club'. This track from the amazing 'One One' is a beautifully arranged slice of theatrical bittersweet pop.

Track released 16-05-2010 on Soma
The Black Dog's 'Music For Real Airports' was without a doubt one of the outstanding albums of the year, proving that the Sheffield electronica veterans still have what it takes after all these years. Their 'CCTV Nation' was turned into one of our favourite techno anthems of 2010 at the hands of Glasgow's Slam.

Track released 12-02-2010 on Infiné
Enigmatic French producer Danton Eeprom made waves with his debut album 'Yes Is More' on Infiné early this year, defying pigeonholing and getting much well-deserved hype. We love this track for its lo-slung, sultry disco-funk feel that bears a winning sleazy grin.

Both Lucy and Prologue had an excellent run this year - the former with his newly founded Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint, the latter with its uncompromising techno releases by Cio D'or, Milton Bradley, and Claudio PRC. 'Kalachakra' is a peak moment for both artist and label - pure, dubbed out techno bliss.

One of the hottest artists to land on our planet this year was without a doubt Space Dimension Controller, whose unique blend of intergalactic funk and synth-house continued to blow our minds throughout 2010.
