Telefon Tel Aviv's 'Immolate Yourself' has been one of the stand-out albums on BPitch Control last year. Its title track gets remixed by four renowned producers: Ben Klock, Miss Fitz, Sascha Funke and Thomas Muller, who deliver great minimalistic interpretations of the anthemic original.

| Word of Mouth: An Interview with Dave Aju by Gareth Owen |
| One of the most original albums we have heard in the last couple of months has got to be Open Wide, the debut from San Franciscan Dave Aju. We sit down with the album's producer - or is it vocalist? |
|
With a couple of low-key releases on Context and Circus Company under his belt, Dave Aju first caught our attention with last year's 'Be Like The Sun' off his 'Love Always' EP: A bebop-like stomper that sounded much like John Coltrane's take on minimal techno. Then his single 'Crazy Place' appeared everywhere this summer - a deep house groover with hypnotic little synth lines, tight percussion and disembodied voices - and people started to ask just who is Dave Aju?
Interest really started to grow, as we discovered that the only instrument used to create this track, and in fact his whole debut album called 'Open Wide', was his mouth. No instruments at all. Of course, he is not the first to do this, but he is one of the very few whose effort can hold its ground musically. 'Open Wide' is a distinctive, innovative house album with a strong, but surreal, lyrical anchor secured to sharp beats, scratchy hooks and a fat natural bass. And that is without taking into consideration the sonic trickery involved. |
| South by Northwest: Süd Electronic by gl03 |
|
Founded by the man behind the highly regarded Portable and Bodycode projects, Süd Electronic's gestation can be traced back to the Johannesburg suburb of Yeoville, where then teenagers Alan Abrahams and Lerato Khathi first crossed paths in 1991. Sharing a common passion for the Chicago house sounds of Armando, Phuture, and Mr. Fingers, the two converted an old theatre into a small club, called Planet Hendon, and experimented with music production. Khathi eventually moved to Toronto to finish her film studies she had commenced in South Africa, while Abrahams professionalised his music making, compiling the influential album project 'Dance For Freedom' in 1994, which coincided with the country's first free elections.
