Hello,
One of the most significant months in many labels' release schedule, the month of May has blessed us with a vast amount of excellent releases.
Flying Lotus' 'Cosmogramma' and Actress' 'Splazsh' weigh in as strong contenders for an Album Of The Year title, and with more great full-lengths by the likes of Trentemøller, Jamie Lidell, Tiefschwarz, Redshape, Ellen Allien, Frank Bretschneider, Guido, and Glimpse, this month had both seasoned champions and young hopefuls throw their hat in the ring.
Enjoy! |
FEATURED RELEASE
Album released 25-05-2010 on Present
When it comes to Redshape, we readily admit to our unconditional fandom. Ever since the masked avenger first appeared on the scene, he has been taking the world of techno by its horns and bending its rules to suite his needs.
As indebted his production may be to the sound of Detroit techno, Redshape's style is distinctly his own. His stoic percussions and drifting arrangements have often been likened to Carl Craig, but Redshape's approach is a more physical one, owing more to the immediacy of Tresor's basement floor than to the sophistication of Motor City soul.
That is not to say that 'Red Pack' lacks soul. On the contrary, just like every Redshape record its six tracks are intricately layered and emotional affairs. It is just that its long, meandering tracks frequently offer the possibility to add an extra layer of percussion and open the filters on those sawtooth lines - and Redshape is often ready to oblige for a moment of perfect elation.
Put in contrast to the subtle restraint he exercises over much of his tracks, these slowly building peak-time moments are what makes Redshape's sound great, and 'Red Pack' once again offers plenty of those. Across its six tracks, 'Red Pack' is a wonderful, timeless techno album, which should not be missed out on.

Man of the moment Kyle Hall doesn't cease to impress: 'Must See' is a sweet house stomper with loose grooves and lush chords, finding its counterpart in the shuffling experimentalism of 'osc_2'. Two more house tracks display a relaxed production style that only this 19 year old seems capable of. Killer EP.

Getting rave reviews across the press and an invitation to this year's Sónar, John Talabot is quite the man of the moment, and 'Matilda's Dream' is definitely another reason to check out his work: Epic, drifting acid house with a deep and melodic cosmic disco vibe. Nice Jaques Renault remix too.
