FEATURED RELEASE
When we interviewed Tony Williams for our Bristol City Focus early last year, little did we know just how influential his perspective on bass music would become over the next 12 months. Not because of his prolific and acclaimed productions of 'serious' dubstep under his Headhunter alias, but for what seemed like his novelty side project at the time: Addison Groove.
Williams had just released one single under the new name: 'Footcrab', which fused the high speed breaks of Chicago's footwork style with UK bass music and which quickly became a worldwide attention grabber.
Now little more than a year later this approach has blossomed into a sub-genre of its own with the productions of Machinedrum, Kuedo, Ital Tek, and Om Unit all exploring similar avenues. Just in time we're treated to Addison Groove's full-length album debut, fittingly released on Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint.
On 'Transistor Rhythm' Williams brings back his trademark bitingly stripped and juke-inspired 808 ghetto infusions such as 'Bad Things' (feat. Spank Rock), 'Rudeboy', and 'Dance of the Women' (feat. Mark Prichard). His love for old-school drum machines (hinted at in the album's artwork) programmed in a cutting edge manner lies at the heart of this album, but clever jazz, dub, and electro references are bound to hold the attention of the more melodically inclined. Powerful dancefloor ignition.

TECHNO / HOUSE ESSENTIALS
Leading up to an entire album by the two scheduled to appear later this year, Barker & Baumecker's 'A Murder Of Crows' is a faultless introduction to their production style. 'Pt. 1' is a remorseless techno banger, its subtle beginnings turning into a full-scale percussive onslaught, whereas 'Pt. 2' shows off their funkier, bouncier side. Perfect.

The seminal New York house imprint Nu Groove saw the Burrell Brothers output many simply outstanding releases under a multitude of monikers around the turn of the 90s. Rush Hour makes them available to the younger house generation, spine-tingling soulful-jacking classics from end to end. Essential.

Sebastian Genz's Moomin moniker is as sweet and beautiful as the curvy, forest-dwelling characters themselves. This three track EP on Hamburg's Smallville opens with the dreamy piano melodies and neatly kicking house beat of 'Sleep Tight'. Perfectly balanced deep house to warm your innards.
Watch out for Barcelona-based George Langham, who produces hard hitting, stumbling techno with the kind of metallic clang that can be traced back to Aphex Twin's seminal 'Quoth'. 'A Stake in the Ground' comes with remixes by Dead Sound and Minimum Syndicat and should appeal to all fans of artist like Regis, Surgeon and Perc. Ace!

The practising surgeon and Prosumer collaborator Murat Tepeli takes time out from his day job to dish out this latest single on Philpot. 'çiftetelli' lands strong with a kicking spacious house bounce, 'Mastika' a stripped-down booty fidget with 'Good' a softly embracing ambient end to the EP. Sweet.

Part 4 of Amsterdam's Dekmantel fifth anniversary series proves ever-more delectable. Swedish duo Skudge with the deadly perfection of 'Silent Running' striding elastic dub techno, whilst Dutchman San Proper's rugged house slice 'Rattle' nonchalantly chants a seductive, blunted groove. Wicked.

Lucy and Xhin, current poster-boys of the austere and spacious techno style, hit it off on the latest single for Chris Liebing's CLR label. 'LX4' employs a stomping broken beat, which has become a trademark for Xhin lately, while 'LX5' makes use of a straight beat and subtle washed-out sound layers. Powerful tools.

ELECTRONICA / AMBIENT ESSENTIALS
Following on from 2011's 'Invisible Insurrection' album, which had a strong Burial influence, Sven Weisemann's no-longer secret identity as Desolate releases a second full-length. Just as beautifully produced, it's a rathermore heavenly affair, with piano and strings augmenting its powerful emotionality.

Eight cuts of slow grinding and densely harmonic tracks that fans of Byetone and Raime wouldn't want to miss.

Album released 12-03-2012 on Subtext
The Bristol-duo return with their precision electronics with this latest five-track EP. Less directly forceful than last year's 'Demiurge', it wields its power in unsettling spaces between metallic noise sweeps, throbbing tones and minutely detailed echos. Some of the best experimental electronics we've heard in a while.
Anne-James Chaton's approach of precision sliced and diced spoken word in 'Evenements 09' goes to the next level in this new collaboration. Carsten Nicolai as Alva Noto frames the spoken word with acute electronics and guitar fragments of Andy Moor in an eerie future-industrial style. Powerful and unique.

ALTERNATIVE / POP / DISCO ESSENTIALS
"Supergroup" is justified as Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) teams up with Tony Allen (former Fela Kuti drummer) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) - Allen's incredible beats form a beautiful framework on which brilliant bass-funk, diverse guest vocals, synths & other noises articulate a unique heartfelt fusion.
Three years after her sensational debut album, 'Lovetune For Vacuum', Soap&Skin returns with a new mini-album that's every bit as dark and emotional as its predecessor. Even a lighthearted pop song such as 'Voyage Voyage' succumbs to the aura of desperation created by Anja Plaschg's voice, piano playing and subtle electronics. Spine chilling.
