Hello,

The current re-issues of Cluster's seminal krautrock recordings have suddenly sparked new interest in the genre: A film about Hans-Joachim Roedelius is in the making, Permanent Vacation unearth East German synth tunes, and a variety of artists cross over folk, neo-classic and electronica to great acclaim.

Along comes 'Pop Ambient 2010', Kompakt's tenth instalment of its genre-defining series and perhaps the most refined to date. Reason enough to dedicate this newsletter to our current favourites on the fringes of ambient and instrumental pop, and if you want more, why not check out Popnoname's exclusive Pop Ambient Mix, hosted by our friends from r.fm.

Enjoy!
 FEATURED RELEASE

Compilation released 18-01-2010 on Kompakt
Kompakt's Pop Ambient compilation series was first started in 2001, at a time when the 90s hype surrounding ambient music had already faded away somewhat. With a line-up of almost exclusively German artists, 'Pop Ambient 2001' managed to invigorate the genre by exploring Kompakt's classic themes of nature vs. technology and avant-garde vs. pop.

Once again Kompakt has assembled an all-star line-up, including genre-defining The Orb and Thomas Fehlmann, Kompakt masterminds Reinhard Voigt and Jürge Paape, and current dub(techno) hotshots Bvdub and Mikkel Metal.

The tracks on display mostly explore the tension between acoustic and synthetic sounds - plucked guitar strings and fragile piano notes are a recurring theme, and Wolfgang Voigt goes as far as using the traditional zither as a main instrument in his track 'Zither und Horn'. More outstanding efforts come from DJ Koze, whose 'Bodenweich' most closely resembles a melancholic pop song, and City Centre Offices artist Marsen Jules, whose great opening track 'The Sound Of One Lip Kissing' is a to the point exercise is contemplative arrangement.

All in all, Kompakt has put together a great anniversary edition for its influential series that should not be missed by any means.
 MORE KRAUTRONICA ESSENTIALS

Compilation released 15-01-2010 on Permanent Vacation
Its title both a nod to krautsynth pioneers Tangerine Dream and the scarcity of exotic fruit in former East Germany, Mandarinenträume compiles electronic music from the German Democratic Republic's final decade. Poppish synth tunes explore escapist motives of sci-fi and fantasy, a great historic document unearthed by Permanent Vacation.
EP released 18-01-2010 on Contentismissing
ContentIsMissing offers up a meditative, cinematic exploration into sound crafted by new signing, Skate. Underwater Retreats comes as a massive package of four expertly-nuanced original tracks, remixes by Christoph de Babalon, MusSick, and Nikia Bustla, as well as four HD videos and, yes, three ringtones!
Album released 15-01-2010 on Type
Inspired by Lancashire's West Pennine Moors, Richard Skelton has recorded 'Landings', a beautiful album of folk-infused neo-classical compositions, which was promptly snatched up by Birmingham's brilliant Type label. An album of ethereal beauty and one of our favourite discoveries of the year so far.
Maxi-Single released 12-01-2010 on Ghostly International
Magnificent, densely layered ambient pop by Danish outfit Syntaks. While 'Sudden Dream' is elegiac slow-motion affair, 'Mistral Moon' starts out with a heavy-footed beat with distant stutters of distortion and oceans of atmospheric rumblings climaxing in triumphant melodies. Nice.
Album released 14-09-2009 on Lo Recordings
Orinally released in 1975, Bernard Fevre's synthstrumentals take the krautronica aesthetics into a slightly sleazy disco direction. An unacknowledged masterpiece, at long last re-issued.
Maxi-Single released 25-08-2008 on Erkrankung Durch Musique
Four-track EP by Kluster's Conrad Schnitzler with re-edits by Dompteur Mooner, part of the of successful electro combo Zombie Nation. Krautrock ambient meets electro-disco from an institution in german electronic music. A must-have!
