Low Motion Disco's debut album 'Keep It Slow' was our surprise hit of the summer. Staying nailed to the top spot of the zero" chart for months on end is no mean feat, so we took that as our excuse to catch up with the media shy Swiss couple for an exclusive interview.

Husband and wife musical partnerships are a rare beast in our fickle world of contemporary music. When the duo in question is Low Motion Disco, and the music is a self-contained universe of low slung grooves, elastic noises and musical humour, you know that something special is afoot; "We fell in love and it all went from there. We're wife and husband, mom and dad, writers and musicians. We love doing things with - and for each other."

It is somewhat fitting that Low Motion Disco should find their spiritual home on Eskimo Recordings, the Ghent based label who have spearheaded the recent revival in disco influenced sounds, but to call Low Motion Disco a disco act would be to miss the point. Their musical background reaches much further, as is evident from the various musical reference points in their songs, from Five Stairsteps' 'Ooh Child' to Rene & Angela's 'I Love You More'; "Everything came from curiosity and interest. And my dad's record collection!" says Reeto "He had the hugest record collection in the neighbourhood; blues, big band, jazz, soul, some disco, black music. That was our background and the inspiration for Low Motion Disco basically."
The Low Motion sound, as the name suggests, is not for tearing up dancefloors, but for relaxing and listening. A soundtrack for enjoying the moment. Are they ever tempted to up the intensity a notch or two? "That's almost like asking an astronaut if he was ever tempted to go diving. And yes, we could easily be. Here's a promise: as soon as we feel like doing it, we will. Pretty easy, isn't it? No boundaries, no rules. I Bet the astronauts would love some occasional diving, too. As long as it doesn't go faster than 118 beats per minute, of course!"

And what about dancing whilst standing still, one of the things they suggest you can do whilst listening to the album. What does this really mean? "It's about being yourself, instead of expressing who you are. You have to try it to experience the spirit. Start by standing up. Do the smallest movements you possibly can. Close your eyes, if it helps and invent new forms of expressions. Just feel the music, instead of expressing what you feel. It will get you closer to its idea. We love to watch advanced dancers when they are warming up, or having a break. That's when they are keeping it low; It looks unspectacular, but it must feel great.

This flexible attitude and playful sense of humour underline a more serious aspect to the duo, and what inspires them to create; "The physical pain of writing stories. As authors, finding the right expression can be pretty exhausting. Writing a story is not the most pleasurable experience, especially when it comes to finishing it. Music redirects our thoughts. It's a recreation and a great way to build the appropriate pressure to go back and finish the story. We couldn't write without music and vice versa."

So after a hard day in the studio, how do Low Motion Disco wind down? "Sleeping, having sex, eating, reading, talking. The relaxing moments of life."
