Hello,
Not much shorter than usual, our July summary proves how much excellent music is being released in the formerly 'dead' summer season, including highlights that would be a crime to miss: Shed's eagerly expected third album, Deniz Kurtel's star-studded sophomore full-length, or the album debut of one of the most influential women in dubstep: Cooly G.
Enjoy! |
FEATURED RELEASE
Few people could get away with choosing the picture of a rugged bass speaker as the cover of their album and naming it 'The Killer'. But then, Rene Pawlowitz a.k.a Shed is not anybody, and certainly not your average techno producer.
His two previous albums for Ostgut Ton, 'Shedding The Past' (2008) and 'The Traveller' (2010), are widely considered as two of the past few years' defining electronic music albums, while his single releases under guises such as Equalized, Head High, WK7 and Wax have been spectacularly successful at capturing the essence of rough, chord-driven Berlin techno.
Released on Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint, 'The Killer' certainly goes a long way of re-uniting the two sides of Shed, the full-length experimentalist and the single-dropping crowd-pleaser. It might not be quite the techno album some fans have been hoping for, but it is a far more floor-oriented affair then his deep, breakbeat-dissecting debut or the experimental sketchbook that constituted his sophomore album.
Tracks like 'Silent Witness', 'I Come By Night' or 'Ride On' wouldn't seem out of place on one of his Hardwax-backed vinyl releases and show off a newly found penchant for thick sawtooth leads. Shed's experimental treatment of broken beats is still a defining element, yielding especially impressive results in combination with his inimitable way of compressing and distorting drum sounds. The album's more sentimental moments, notably closing track 'Follow The Leader' and interlude 'Gas Up', might feel a little naive and slightly at odds with the album's presumed concept, but as a whole 'The Killer' is the work of a producer at the height of his prowess.

FEATURED EXCLUSIVE

Number thirteen of Clones Basement Series, 'Archive II' sees Dave Huisman step up once more as A Made Up Sound with two hard 'n fiesty concoctions. 'Hang Up' wraps a niggling strain of toxic funk in a dusky techno cloak, 'Sweetback' slings bolshier knocks in concentric asymmetry. Killer, don't miss!

|
|
Alden Tyrell might be most famous for his disco anthems, but 'Rush' and 'Tntus' for Clone's brilliant Basement Series is a pair of pure grungy techno tracks complete with synth stabs reminiscent of Aril Brikha's timeless 'Groove La Cord'. zero" exclusive.

TECHNO / HOUSE ESSENTIALS

Maxi-Single released 27-07-2012 on Suol
Till von Sein really pushes our buttons with his choice of remix artists on this one: Boo Williams teams up the Windy City all-stars of Strictly Jaz Unit for a relaxed but pounding jazz piano house piece, and legendary Chez Damier absolutely kills it with three percussive acid tech workouts. Highly recommended.

|
|
From Toronto-based duo Gingy & Bordello's recent pounding EP 'Iron & Water' an interesting storm of remixes emerge. Locked Groove keeps 'Panopticon' fiesty, T. Jijn cranks up the tension in 'Ausbruch', the excellent Kevin McPhee mutely reconstructs the title track whilst Cicerio acheives an effective minimal approach.

Detroit's D'Marc Cantu follows a similar trajectory to his last year's 'Fallen' on Crème Organization yet devoted to his home-town and its rich heritage it has a more meandering, introspective feel. From the bleary synth-melodic 'Spirit Form' to the propelling Detroit force of 'Green Bike Sea', a simple approach superbly executed.

|
Following up the first set of remixes of Luke Slater's seminal 'Function 4' from 2000 on Peacefrog, this second set sees further refractions. Two by Lucy, first revelling in new complexities and the second booting it in the bass regions, Marcel Dettman's dub adds creamy layers and Shifted nips and slices. Excellent.

EP released 16-07-2012 on Dial
Two years since his wonderful debut album 'Glass Eights' on Dial, John Roberts returns. A diffuser approach, his deeply luxurious productions lean more towards rich acoustic instrumentation, loose rhythms and grainy samples, with 'Crushing Shells' the nearest to 'Glass Eights' housier offerings. Lush EP.

Three svelte cuts from Holland's Paul Du Lac on the purveyors of nimble dance goods at Clone Jack For Daze. The bountiful energy of 'Child's Play' with tightly tucked Chi-town beats working it to the bleep test, 'Space Below' a cosmic-bound haze and 'Tantra Master' quaking synths over a muscular swing.

|
Magda, Marc Houle and Troy Pierce's Items & Things imprint releases its first comprehensive compilation, that further elaborates the label's proposed fusion between minimalism and new-wavish synth pop. With the likes of Jimmy Edgar and Populette on board this is well worth your time though.

A stunning little EP on Vienna Wildstyle Recordings from Norway's Olle Sjoegren, the first non-Austrian artist to grace the label. Deftly woven electronic textures, subtly crafted instrumental explorations, dancier quirk and poppy-experimental excursions that are well worth checking out.

|
Hot new talent on Circus Company Franck Roger dishes out this saucy maxi, 'Spread Love' is a slice of heady sensual deep house with a catchy vocal hook, 'Black Kiss' cruises through with synths glistening like underwater gems and a dreamy vocal chasing languidly. Summer vibes ahoy.

After numerous EPs Niels Luinenberg aka Delta Funktionen drops his long due debut album on the fabulous Delsin label. 'Traces' starts out with classic electro styles, moves into equally timeless techno territory and back again, always maintaining a tangible and authentic quality. Excellent.

|
Off of Ed Davenport's top debut album 'Counterchange' earlier this year, comes this neat EP. With the shimmering rolling techno of 'Elvish' appearing exclusive, as well two corkers from the album and an oozing Roman Lindau rework of 'Somewhere'.

|
The Brooklyn duo, with an album in the pipeline, arrive in style at R&S. 'Motif' a mighty hypnotic soupy synth brew harking loosely in techno delirium, 'Eternal' with a poppier dancefloor appeal and the Actress remix deploying stern strategies and reinventing its DNA in a heaving crunchy technoid beast. Essential.

|
First one for fellow Berlin resident Dave Huisman on Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint. Two weighty slices of nifty brooding techno, 'Malfunction (Adjust)' slithering and snaking neurotically and 'Malfunction (Despair)' a lighter more pensive version with echoing highs inducing goosebumps. Excellent.

EP released 03-07-2012 on Dolly
A smartingly grooving EP from Brooks Mosher once again on Dolly, 'Refraction' manages a contented melodic jackin' ditty, subtly touching all bases of classic Chicago and devilish Detroit synths. 'Nimbus' flexes acrobatic arpgeggios and 'CS-137' stone-face kills it. Top notch.

Album released 30-07-2012 on Soma
Big room tech-house duo and Cocoon stalwarts Pig&Dan join the Soma camp for their latest album, 'Decade'. It's a purebred dance album and as such it's hard to fault, as each of it's eleven tracks has the potential to rock dance floors from London to Ibiza without as much as a breather.

ELECTRONICA / AMBIENT ESSENTIALS
|
|
The second collaborative effort between Japanese piano meister Ryuichi Sakamoto and Californian guitarist Christopher Willits takes the form of six-part instrumental song cycle. The slow beams of cloud-like ambience align with the patience of planetary rotations and a strikingly uplifting energy. Highly recommended.

Skam regulars Team Doyobi push forward with their fascination in excavating murky corners of their various computer soundcards. 8-bit chiptunes perhaps replaced with higher resolutions yet these twisted rhythmic jitters and cyber-mystical synthtopias are still the ingenious workings of the Team Doyobi brain.

|
A compilation of 13 of Com Truise's earlier, unreleased tracks some of which brought for the first time from the nether regions of his studio. Silky, hypercolour synths and slow-grooving drum machine chic in finest form, as worthy a trip as his other 'proper' releases. Check!

Maxi-Single released 01-07-2012 on Subtext
Two extremely intense variations of Emptyset's incredible recent 'Demiurge' album. First up Paul Jebanasam, who reprocesses the album as a whole with emphasis on guitar noise from Gravenhurst, ex-Vex'd man Roly Porter does a fine job spinning webs of tense cinematic sonics. Wicked.

Album released 30-07-2012 on LOaF
Another promising new LOaF signing delivers its first album, and 'Happiness Machines' by Nottingham's Moscow Youth Cult sounds a bit like Nathan Fake producing a 1969 parallel universe incarnation of the Beatles, with plenty of detuned synths, soaring strings and electronic weirdness thrown in the mix. Fun!
