South London collective Horsepower Productions is commonly credited for inventing the dubstep genre, and while this is a bold claim, there's certainly a grain of truth in it. Picking up on the darker UK garage vibe of Zed Bias and El-B, the group's seminal 2003 album 'In Fine Style' presented a stripped down garage sound, adding influences from reggae and dub, as well as making abundant use of the genre's future trademark: the subbass wobble.
Initially a trio, Horsepower's line-up was reduced to main man Benny Ill on subsequent releases, but recently Ill has once again been joined by original members Lev Jnr and Nasis, as well as new collaborator Jay King for the production of the group's third and eagerly anticipated album, 'Quest For The Sonic Bounty'. Released on Tempa, 'Quest For The Sonic Bounty' is a massive album that lives up to the legend of its creators. In true Horsepower fashion, each of the album's 10 tracks weighs a ton and liberally references dub and reggae influences. Reggae legend Lee Perry features via a Horsepower remix of his track 'Exercising', as does current UK shooting star Katy B, who contributes vocals to the album's closing track, 'Open Your Eyes'.
