Compiled by Cinnaman and Jay Scarlett, this EP gathers the best of the new breed of instrumental beatmakers. Danny Breaks and Adlib drop some bass experimentations, and gifted newcomers from Vienna, Quebec, Karachi and L.A. offer up shuffling disjointed beats and great wonky business.

Ninja Tune's Big Dada pulls a single off of last year's critically-lauded solo debut album, 'Jerusalaam Come', by Juice Aleem. Si Begg, who produced the original track, contributes a total of 6 new versions of 'Rock My Hologram', while new Big Dada signing, Offshore, takes 'Higher Higher' to new heights with his mind-bending remix.
Dubstep Special: dBridge & Instra:mental, Illum Sphere, Slugabed
As dubstep is coming of age, we are getting ready for the next wave: producers that combine influences from a variety of genres with the once revolutionary half-step breaks of dubstep. Be it the drum'n bass and electro allusions of dBridge and Instra:mental, the stumbling downbeat of Illum Sphere, or the riff-heavy, mutated G-Funk of Planet Mu artist Slugabed and Kuedo, 2010 has been a big year for the new sound so far.

Funk Du Monde: An Interview with Débruit by gl03
French beat maker Débruit has recently been setting dance floors on fire with his mixture of electronic hip hop, 2Step and globalised funk. We track the neo-Londoner down for an interview.

A whole generation of artists seems to be currently conspiring against the dogma of rhythmic precision in electronic music. Injecting the groove back into the music, most of these artists reject their easy categorisation under the 'wonky' label - a term coined by the music press to subsume the groove-infused electronic hip-hop that has lately been coming forward from many corners of the world - via L.A. and Amsterdam, Dublin or Vienna.
Eager to expand the geographical spectrum associated with this kind of music even more is Xavier Thomas a.k.a. Débruit: Congolese basement basement bars in suburban Paris have influenced his music just as much as has the multi-cultural London neighbourhood of Dalston, where the born Breton has relocated to in late 2009. Débruit is currently recording for London's Civil Music and own his Musique Large label, and he's just released his 'Heart Beats For Haiti' EP to benefit the victims of the recent earthquake. |
The debut album of young Londoner Paul White blew us all away this summer: 21 brilliant sketches of highly original, sample-heavy hip-hop breaks that are over far too soon. Constant replay recommended.
Irish label and record store All City has long been one of the world's finest purveyors of wonky & instrumental hip hop. 2008's popular '7x7' series of limited edition 45s has been collected for this digital-only compilation, which includes tracks from beatmakers Mike Slott, Hudson Mohawke, Onra and Dimlite.

Long-time Hudson Mohawke partner in the Heralds of Change, Mike Slott has finally released his album debut this year as well. Brittle, stumbling hip-hop tracks, just how we like our wonky business. Perfect.
