Once upon a time, Berlin was not just famous for of its abundance of makeshift industrial party venues, but also for a dark and industrial style of techno that resonated within, in the smoke-filled cavernous spaces of clubs like the Bunker or the Tresor. It is this tradition that Ancient Methods refer to with the three releases the young label has put out so far, and which have been supported by like-minded DJs such as Surgeon, Adam X or Regis, with the latter contributing a remix to Ancient Methods' most recent outing, 'Third Method'.
It doesn't come as much of a surprise that the two DJs and producers behind Ancient Methods, Trias and Baeks, are indeed no newcomers to Berlin's sprawling techno scene. Since the mid-90s they have been associated with the Tresor camp, contributing to the 'Headquarters' series of compilations and Baeks being responsible for programming the 'Headquarters - New Faces' club night, aimed at introducing new artists within the Tresor context. Despite these roots and affiliations, any suspicions of conservatism would be ill-founded, when it comes the Ancient Methods musical output. Combining industrial sound design with intense avant-garde beats, the two producers justify the buzz surrounding their releases by shaping a style that's quite unlike anything else out there. Inspiration might be drawn from the raw energy and density of 1990s techno, but Ancient Methods create music that works outside the boundaries of any electronic music genre past or present. As ancient as the methods may be, they have rarely sounded quite as fresh. |
