7even Recordings' first long player surfaces courtesy of their premier artist, F. With 'Energy Distortion', the young French producer cultivates a sound fusing traditional dub-techno aesthetics (a la Basic Channel) within a new school framework (a la dubstep), resulting in devastating and hypnotic material.
Everyone seems to be hot on James Blake... with good reason, as nobody is making music like him at the moment! Third member of Mount Kimbie's live acts, James Blake has been striking out on his own creating frighteningly original bass music for labels like Hemlock, R&S Records, and here on Hessle Audio.

| The Shape Of Breaks To Come: An Interview with FaltyDL by gl03 |
| New York's Drew Lustman has won over countless fans last year, mixing up abstract hip-hop, UK garage, and Rephlex-style electronica in his productions for Planet Mu and Ramp Recordings. Right in time for the release of his new EP we conduct a brief Q&A session with the man known to most as FaltyDL. |
|
On rare occasions barriers of time, space and musical cultures seem to melt down, condense and solidify into something new and outrageous at the hands of a gifted individual. Take the example of Drew Lustman, whose recordings as FaltyDL have been among the most hyped of the year 2009.
Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, didn't exactly predestine Lustman to a career of chopping up all dance music genres ever conceived on the British Isles, adding a large dose of sample-based hip-hop and coming up with a unique musical recipe of his own. Yet this is precisely what he ended up doing, and while his prior experience as a sushi cook and jazz bassist might have helped a bit in the process, the general public had been left largely unprepared for the firework of fresh ideas that was 'Love Is Liability' - his debut album that used UK garage breaks, dubstep bass and dreamy Ceephax synths to conjure up mid-90s rave moods with modern means. |
Mala's influential Deep Medi imprint releases its first label compilation: 'Releases Vol.1' is a collection of the labels first five singles, including dubstep classics like Loefah's 'Disko Rekah' or Mala's 'Forgive'. With the originals increasingly hard to come by, this is the best way to get these vital tunes.

| Dubstep Special: dBridge & Instra:mental, Illum Sphere, Slugabed |
| As dubstep is coming of age, we are getting ready for the next wave: producers that combine influences from a variety of genres with the once revolutionary half-step breaks of dubstep. Be it the drum'n bass and electro allusions of dBridge and Instra:mental, the stumbling downbeat of Illum Sphere, or the riff-heavy, mutated G-Funk of Planet Mu artist Slugabed and Kuedo, 2010 has been a big year for the new sound so far. |

The Hague's techno-meets-dubstep pioneer Dave Huismans a.k.a. 2562 returns to his own imprint as A Made Up Sound: 'Sun Touch' and 'Drain' are excellent futuristic dubstep efforts - sparse, deep, and drone-drenched - while the third track, 'Untitled', shuffles it up Detroit-style. Perfect.

Hyperdub welcomes Rinse FM's breakfast show host, DVA, with a great 12", showcasing his unique take on the UK Funky bug: Staggering rhythms, tribal percussions and sawing synths serve as the backdrop to the grimy 'Natty' and the straighter 'Ganja'. Excellent debut.
French dubstep producer Florent Aupetit a.k.a. F delivers a preview of his debut album, which is scheduled for release in March: 'Energy Distortion' is a densely layered, drifting track, which gets a more down-to-earth treatment by London's Untold. Recommended.
Since going solo, Berlin ex-pat Jamie Vex'd has stricken his own path away from the sound that he helped pioneer as one-half of the dubstep production duo, Vex'd. His bass experimentalism continues as he introduces his latest project under the alias Kuedo for Planet Mu.
Slugabed is the latest in young, hotly-tipped producers to be featured on the venerable Planet Mu label. On the 6-track EP 'Ultra Heat Treated', Slugabed showcases a crunked-up, genre-bending sound that carves its own unique path between dubstep, hip-hop, and grime. Fans of Rustie, Zomby, and Shortstuff take notice!
The 50th edition of Fabric's acclaimed Fabriclive series, dBridge and Instra:mental's mix is a land-mark release more than worthy of the round catalogue number. With their Autonomic podcast the London based trio has recently taken the web by storm, fluently crossing over styles ranging from electro-funk and hip-hop to dubstep and abstract electronica.
Their 'Autonomic' Fabric mix condenses the genre-binding concept of their ridiculously popular podcasts in 73 awestruck minutes, laying out the blueprint for a distinct style of their own, both coherent and diverse.
Autonomic shifts seamlessly between the breakneck speeds of drum'n bass and dubstep's half-step, picking up the pace at just the right moments, while leaving plenty of space for more introspective tracks and even some genuine pop moments, such as Riya's lovely r'n'b style opening track 'Seems Like', forthcoming on dBridge's own label Exit Records.
Besides plenty of dBridge and Instra:mental's own material, the mix features productions by cutting-edge artists of the moment, such as Scuba, Distance or Actress. For anyone interested in new sounds, Autonomic is as contemporary as it can get.

Martyn compiles the 50th edition of Fabric's official mix series and proceeds to take it to a new direction. The Dutch producer flawlessly blends multiple tempos and styles resulting in Fabric's most refreshing mix to date. Feat. tracks by Actress, Roska, Zomby, 2562, Kode9, and more!
Being more than just a collection of tracks 'Elevator Music' presents the most prevalent dubstep artists, for example Martyn, Untold, Starkey and many more. Ranging from playful tracks like 'The Moth' by Julien Bashmore to spheric compositions by Om Unit the compilation has one least common denominator: BASS. The perfect shot for UK-influenced listeners, and those who want to stay up-to-date!

What else can be expected when UK super-talent Skream remixes legendary Instra:mental than a high-class dubstep tune, with a bassline that shakes the floor. While 'No Future' stands out with powerful beats and spooky voices, Skream's own ' Minimalistic' concentrates on more experimental sounds. A class of its own!

When Ostgut Ton commissioned Hotflush's Scuba to create a mix for the quarterly dubstep showcase, SUB:STANCE, the task was to recreate the vibe of one of Berghain's signature nights. Scuba has obliged this task with a AAA-class mix feat. Joker, Joy Orbison, Pangaea, and Scuba himself.

Martyn's imprint, 3024, returns after a brief hiatus since the release of the full-length, 'Great Lengths' to deliver a stunning set of remixes from the hottest names in electronic music. Zomby's remix of 'Hear Me' is a funktified dancefloor smash, while Redshape's 'Seventy Four' remix is a brooding, tension-builder. Ace!

The label of London-based producer Actress is currently tipped as one of the hottest properties in the electronic music business and covers a wide variety of styles - from 8-bit infused grime and dub(step) by producers like Zomby and Disrupt to experimental downbeat by Lukid and Actress' own productions, which oscillate between grungy house, lo-fi electro and abstract electronica.
