2008 has easily been the most productive year for Detroit's Matrix Records in well over a decade. With Arne Weinberg, Shawn Rudiman or rising talent Arthur Oskan label owner Sean Deason has rounded up some of the finest producers in the neo-Detroit scene, breathing new life into his historic label. 2009 will see the re-release of two classic Deason albums as well as a brand new full length called 'Dot & Etta's Shrimp Hut'.
While Matrix Records might not have claimed the same degree of fame as other Motor City imprints during Detroit techno's boom times, the label's influence should not be underestimated. In operation for 16 years now - by itself no small feat in the short-lived techno business - Matrix has been home to the early outings of some highly remarkable producers, such as Gerard Hanson's first Convextion and E.R.P. productions or Stewart Walker, who recorded for the label before setting up his own Persona Records imprint.
The mastermind behind Matrix Records is Sean Deason, member of the 'third wave' of Detroit techno producers, who honed his production skills with early Plus 8 recording artists Richie Hawtin, Kenny Larkin and Daniel Bell before setting up Matrix. Deason's debut album 'Razorback' appeared on the German !K7 label back in 1996, followed by 'Allegory & Metaphor' on Intuit Solar in 2001. Both classic albums have recently been remastered and will be re-released in early March, leading up to 'Dot & Etta's Shrimp Hut', Deason's long awaited third full length, which will once again fuse breakbeat and electro elements with deep Detroit techno in classic Sean Deason style. 'Razorback 2.0' and 'Allegory & Metaphor 2.0' will be released on March 3, 'Dot & Etta's Shrimp Hut' on March 10. |
