Hello,

Detroit's techno pioneers combined dancefloor appeal, emotionality and sophistication in their music - a fusion of elements that is still shaping some of the finest music out there.

Nowhere does this become more apparent than in the history of Carl Craig's seminal Planet E label, which celebrates its 20th anniversary with an unmissable compilation. Poker Flat, Echocord and Freude Am Tanzen meanwhile present their own volumes of future classics.

And yet young artists continue to prove that there's no end to techno history. Take this week's podcast by Aeromaschine, whose recent releases on Baalsaal and Mirau have established the Romanian producer as one of the freshest talents of deep techno sounds.
 FEATURED RELEASE

Compilation released 05-04-2011 on Planet E
There's no doubting Planet E's role as one of the most consistently influential techno labels over two decades and well over one hundred releases, most of them regarded as electronic music classics.

When it comes to assembling an anniversary compilation for such a label the question becomes as much about what you leave out as it is about what you actually select.

Given Carl Craig's impeccable track record as Planet E's A&R over all this time, he is certainly one to master such a daunting task.

An indeed '20 F@%&ing Years of Planet E' doesn't disappoint, offering a cross-section of recent hits, all time classics, as well as a number of less obvious choices, which are never short of excellent. Moodymann's brilliant 1997 classic 'Dem Young Sconies' starts out the selection, followed in short succession by epic Planet E style floor fillers like Lazy Fat People's 'Club Silencio' and Martin Buttrich's 'Full Clip'.

Basic Channel surface in their Quadrant guise with 1993's 'Hyperprism', while Urban Tribe's 'Covert Action' and Innerzone Orchestra's 'Bug In The Bassbin' represent Carl Craig's love for cut-up jazz drum breaks. More classics include Kirk Degiorgio's 'Clinically Inclined', Craig's own 'Dominas', and The Black Dog's 'Nort Route'.

So what's missing then? Planet E's most soulful phase feels a bit under-represented - 'People Make The World Go Round' might have made a nice addition. Also skipped are some of C2's biggest hits: 'Throw' and 'At Les' for instance, but this feels quite intentional, leaving more room to discover less often heard gems on this essential compilation.

Maxi-Single released 11-04-2011 on Phonica
Fresh from touring the world with Carl Craig, Paul Woolford unleashes a stunning single on Phonica. Incorporating sounds from UK funky and dubstep, 'Can't Do Without' is a killer skewed house number with a cheeky bassline while 'Bareback' is a crushed-up moody rhythm driven jam. Heavy!
EP released 11-04-2011 on R&S Records
On a roll since his brilliant Emerald Fantasy Tracks album last year, Lone appears with more old-school electro inspired tracks with a ravey UK edge on R&S. Rich and grainy synths, gently primed house beats and his knack for effortlessly blissful moods prevail. Dynamite release, don't miss!
EP released 12-04-2011 on Scion Audio/Visual
The Dirtbombs have become everybody's darlings over night by covering electronic music classics in a garage rock style. Remixes by Omar S, Kyle Hall and Ectomorph take this one step further, with Kyle Hall's take on 'Bug In The Bassbin' and The Dirtbombs' own version of 'Sharevari' proving particularly delightful.
Maxi-Single released 11-04-2011 on Cocoon Recordings
Maetrik makes his debut on Cocoon Records with a dark, dubbed out house monster. Both tracks represent Estornel's unique style, using hallucinogenic vocals, hypnotic beats and a power that is deep and latently noisy at the same time to put the dancefloor over the edge of insanity.
Maxi-Single released 08-04-2011 on Hartchef Discos
Audio Werner returns in 2011 on Hartchef Discos with this slick and grooving single. 'Can you scratch' is a reduced shuffly house track with a driving bass force and a cheeky bit of scratching whilst '?' is a smooth, jazz-sprinkled deep house number. As ever, wonderful top-notch productions. Hit!
EP released 12-04-2011 on Moustache Records
Moustache Records start a new techno subsidy and unleash an infuriating EP by the mysterious Gesloten Cirkel, who already kicked up some dust with their previous release on Murder Capital. Four dark techno tracks sitting somewhere between Moscow subways and Chicago basements. Big EP!
Album released 15-04-2011 on Suchtreflex
Frederic Moering-Sack & Christian de Jonquières aka Piemont return with their second long-player on their own Suchtreflex imprint. Their slick and sturdy techno house reaches out to grainier terrains, incorporating field recordings and instruments in this solid yet tactile album.
Album released 15-04-2011 on Derwin Recordings
Voom:voom's Christian Prommer and Jazzanova's Axel Barck follow up their recent singles for Permanent Vacation and Gigolo with an entire album of their techhouse/soul/pop explorations, working with a range of vocalists for quite a unique listening and club music experience. Check.
Maxi-Single released 11-04-2011 on mobilee records
Ray Okpara's releases on labels like Oslo and Deep Vibes span deep house and minimal techno and his sound sits perfectly in his Mobilee debut. 'Booty' opens with a great shuffly, tropical vibe, 'Crabapple Road', 'Modern Dance' and 'Coyoacan' continue the housey warmth amidst subtle textures. Nice.
Compilation released 04-04-2011 on Uncanny Valley
Dresden's Uncanny Valley crew strike again, One Day In Metropia in a slow-rolling synthetic electro funk, Credit 00 dishing out some Drexciyan moves, Stefan Lohse going deep with a bubbling acid tinge and the mysterious 'Projektname Unbekannt' rounding off with a very fine space rhythm jam. Brill!
Maxi-Single released 15-04-2011 on Soma
Silicone Soul's 'Right On, Right On' is destined to be a hit in the open air party season, with five of Ibiza's finest regulars supplying remixes: M.A.N.D.Y., Ramon Tapia, Fergie, and, our favourites, Nick Curly with a somewhat restrained house take and ex-Underworlder Darren Emerson adding a Detroitish touch.
Maxi-Single released 04-04-2011 on Soma
Welcoming Glasgow's seminal Soma label's twentieth anniversary, this first release of the series sees East Men's 1994 classic 'U Dig' reworked by Loco Dice and two superb Universal Principle cuts remixed by Italy's DJ Santos and Chicago's Decimal respectively. Swell updates!
Maxi-Single released 15-04-2011 on Komplex de deep
Funk D'Void under his Francois Dubois guise contributes two heavy hitters to Komplex De Deep: Both 'Back 2 Raw' and 'Uprock' are based on the interplay of lush pads and creaking bass-lines, which works exceptionally well on two of the best tracks we've heard from Mr. Sandberg in a while.
Maxi-Single released 08-04-2011 on Mild Pitch
Essen house meets Essen avant-pop when Manuel Tur and Markus Worgull remix Festland. Tur applies diverse trippy vocal filters and pitch effects to 'Welt Verbrennt's original vocals, while Worgull opts for a prime time chord-driven club hit approach. Nice.
Maxi-Single released 04-04-2011 on Ostgut Ton
Chilean-born Panorama Bar resident Dinky serves up two luscious slices of floor-filling deep house. 'Take Me' rotates hypnotic vocal loops over warm bass and experimental jazzy designs while 'Polvo' features a more haunting vocal with a delicate piano over a brassy bass. Stylish moves.
Album released 11-04-2011 on Macro Recordings
Derived from Stefan Goldmann's commissioned ballet 'The Grand Hemiola', the title track sees dramatic orchestral and percussive fragments formed into winding complex rhythms. The remainder are excellent delicate and hypnotic rhythmical compositions, emphasizing the fine acoustic textures. Superb.
Maxi-Single released 04-04-2011 on Uzuri Recordings
A wonderful EP by Heidelberg's deep house king Move D on Uzuri: 'Your Personal Healer' is almost exclusively driven by rhythmic piano chords, interspersed with subtle guitar licks, 'Things Will Come...' is a short, percussive jazz house interlude, and 'Sur un Bateau' features Eric D. Clark for a funked-up piano acid epic. Great!
Maxi-Single released 08-04-2011 on Philpot Records
Philpot Records is one of those buy-on-sight labels for us, and 'Fear Diluted' by Lump's Arttu Snellman is certainly not a record you'll regret blindly purchasing: Two super-minimal and immensely funky Chicago jackers, built from hard-hitting 909 drums, bleepy analogue synths, and sparse vocals. Fantastic release.
EP released 15-04-2011 on Sharivari
Second release by Art Bleek on the so far highly collectable Sharivari imprint. Three excellent tracks of up-tempo, pad-heavy techhouse, balancing Detroit and modern influences, and the oddball 'Deep Hop' thrown in between, which fuses house and '60s easy-listening grooves. Very nice EP.
Maxi-Single released 14-04-2011 on Coincidence Records
Two fine Detroit-style techno tracks by Dutch producer Jeroen Search, taking a deep and minimalistic Robert Hood inspired direction. Do not miss the added Conforce mix, which is an absolutely bad-ass dub techno monster and comes highly recommended.
Maxi-Single released 01-04-2011 on Seventh Sign Recordings
Known as a member of the seminal 3 Chairs, Marcellus Pittmann's solo work is equally as essential. Three tracks for Seventh Sign begin hot and heavy in 'The Mad Underdog', soothed by lush soulful house grooves in 'You Want Me (Never)' and sparse, shuffled house abstractions rounding off a brilliant EP.
EP released 21-03-2011 on Infiné
Infiné label head Agoria once again brings together the finest artists in the neo-classical, house and techno worlds to remix his and Kid A's 'Heart Beating'. Sylvain Chauveau delivers a Björk-style pop opera, Argy opts for tech-house dancefloor appeal, and John Roberts goes for free-style square-dance indie charms. Lovely.
Album released 05-04-2011 on Ghostly International
Ghostly assembles remixes for Matthew Dear's 'Slowdance' (by How To Dress Well, Todd Edwards, and Bear In Heaven) that do a great job in deriving various flavours of drag and electro-pop from the original. As an added bonus you get all versions of 'You Put A Smell On Me' and 'Little People (Black City)'. Essential.
EP released 01-04-2011 on In My Room
Remixes for Trentemøller's 'Shades Of Marble' have the man himself going first with a version that sounds like a 1979 Human League teaming up with the London Symphonic and, well, Trentemøller. Kink delivers a less controversial, nicely chord-driven take, while Kasper Bjørke goes for moody slowed-down disco.
Album released 04-04-2011 on CLR
Tommy Four Seven comes armed to the teeth when it comes to technique in the studio. Utilizing a host of found sounds and vocals from field recordings to cultivate his distinct sound, T47's debut full-length for Chris Liebing's CLR, 'Primate', displays the muscle and depth of field that comes from a mastery of the tools of the trade.
EP released 04-04-2011 on Rush Hour
