With a line-up of two pianos, drums and subtle electronics, Aufgang deliver the most buoyant take so far on the current classical-meets-pop trend.
Despite their young age, the three people behind Aufgang have quite impressive musical careers to show for: Francesco Tristano is a rising star on the classical music circuit and has gained further recognition with his extravagant piano interpretations of tracks by Derrick May and Jeff Mills, which in turn have lead to collaborations with Detroit techno star Carl Craig. For Aufgang, Tristano has teamed up with long-term friend and fellow virtuoso pianist Rami Khalifé, as well as Aymeric Westrich, a former hip-hop producer and drummer for Cassius and Phoenix.
Aufgang's self-titled debut album, which has been released on Agoria's acclaimed Infiné label, treads a fine line between classical, club and pop music, displaying intimate knowledge of all of these genres, but striving for a unique style of its own. High-energy piano anthems like 'Channel 7' alternate with reflective tracks such as 'Prelude Du Passé', while the album's accompanying remixes by producers like Robert Hood, Wareika and Sutekh further elaborate on Aufgang's abundant club music references. The jury might still be out on whether Aufgang is the brilliant missing link between concert hall and club, or rather something like a clever 21st century update of Rondo Veneziano, but as long as their music remains as fresh and lively as it is, we frankly couldn't care less about the philosophical ramifications. You'll definitely have to hear this for yourself. |
