As the electronic music community descends on Amsterdam this week for the ADE conference and its numerous events, what better way to kickstart our new City Features series than taking a look at the music of the Dutch capital. We have a chat with the lovely Shinedoe about her city and feature some of our favourite classic and new cuts direct from Amsterdam, from techno to disco, electro to old school.
Chinedum Nwosu's involvement in Amsterdam's dance music began at the young age of 15, as a dancer performing in clubs, video clips and with artists like Quazar and Warp. From the early 90s she has developed her style as a DJ and producer, covering house, techno and even Drum & Bass under the moniker 'Black Magic Queen', Shinedoe has become one of Amsterdam's most well known and loved dance music figures. She co-owns and runs Intacto Records, produces and DJs internationally.

How long have you lived in Amsterdam?

All my life, I was born in Diemen, but moved to Amsterdam when I was a baby. So basically I've lived all my live in Amsterdam.

In what ways do you think Amsterdam has influenced your productions/DJing?

Amsterdam has influenced me with it's multicultural environment. Also I grew up hearing many styles of music, so I am very open minded and can appreciate different kinds of music. When I DJ or produce, I try to be open minded and not restrain my self to one style.

What is your favourite Amsterdam club and why?

To be honest…I don't really have a favorite club now. I used to like a club/restaurant called 11 (R.I.P) and the Roxy (R.I.P.). Now I enjoy the Klinch nights in de Melkweg, and Paradiso for big concerts..

What is/are your favourite record store in Amsterdam?

Rushhour, because of their diversity of records, and Outland Records.

Who is your favourite/most influential Amsterdam artist?

Each artist influences me in a different way, but in electronic music I definitely have to say... 2000 and One, no doubt about it!

Is there one piece of music (electronic or otherwise) which you think encapsulates the feel of your city?

Yes, this month my new release 'IBO grooves' will be out on my label Intacto Records. I describe this track as combination Afro-Euro track. So yeah it's definitely got the feel of Amsterdam.

If you had a day off from the studio/club/label in your city, how would you spend your day?

I like to spend my free days visiting the cinema called The Movies, an old arthouse cinema on the Haarlemmerdijk. Or having walking in the Westerpark, one of my favorite parks, or meeting up with friends in the Jordaan (nine streets) in the centre, and going to concerts at Melkweg or Paradiso. There is a lot to do here in Amsterdam... unfortunately I don't always have time to check everything out!
