Few labels could suffer graver injustice by pigeon-holing them according to their biggest hits. Border Community, the British label run by James Holden has had such tremendous success with trancey techno tracks such as Fairmont's 'Gazebo', or Extrawelt's 'Soopertrack' that it is easy to forget that the hits are part of a grander design drawn up by Holden and his tightly knit family of artists.
Take Nathan Fake as an example: The uniquely talented producer has been constantly on the rise since releasing his dance floor hit 'Outhouse' in 2003. Yet only by listening to his debut album can one grasp the scope and breadth of his productions: 'Drowning In A Sea Of Love' has Fake emulating an entire indie band on his home-computer and old Casio keyboard, seamlessly shifting between subtle ambient sound-scapes and sugar-sweet screeching noise orgies.

Similar observations can be made for the rest of Border Community's crew, which includes Fairmont, Ricardo Tobar, Petter and Luke Abbott. As a rule of thumb, any of their floor-friendly melodic techno tunes is offset by some insanely experimental freestyle jam, more akin to an Aphex Twin or Chris Clark production than to anything you might hear in an Ibiza afterhours club.

It is precisely this lovable, anarchic spirit that has made Border Community such a popular imprint in recent years, not only among the raving masses but also with music lovers as well as the press. Given the label's undeterred will for exploring uncharted territories, more surprise discoveries can be expected on Border Community's musical frontier.
